Catholic of Pointe Coupee Hands Matthew Moreau Two Jobs

Matthew Moreau, a first-time head coach, is 3-2 at Catholic of Pointe Coupee after taking football and the high school athletic director job together.

Catholic of Pointe Coupee named Matthew Moreau head football coach and athletic director on June 1, handing a first-time head coach two jobs.

The Hornets are 3-2 in New Roads after they lost 6-31 at Catholic-New Iberia on Oct. 2. District 9-1A play has not started.

Two Titles on One New Roads Hire

The school’s June 1 announcement welcomed “Coach Mo,” his wife Kristen, and their son Sam to the Hornet family. It listed stops at Teurlings Catholic, Catholic High in Baton Rouge, Walker, and Acadiana, and it sold faith, leadership, and student development as the fit.

The faculty roster now lists Moreau as a teacher, head football coach and high school athletic director. Assistant principal Aiman Bayoumi still carries a middle school and high school athletic director title, so the office is split even as football and the high school sports calendar sit on Moreau’s desk.

That second title is the load. Catholic of Pointe Coupee is an LHSAA member for high school sports that also runs baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball, track, golf, powerlifting, fishing, soccer, cheer, and dance. Moreau had never been a head coach of any of them.

This is my first head coaching job, so I’m learning all kinds of things in a hurry. Definitely, time management has to be on point.

He said that on July 6, before a snap had been played. The dual job was already the thing he named, not a reporter’s frame.

Jacob Carruth Left a 26-9 Program for Home

Moreau did not inherit a wreck. Jacob Carruth went 8-4 in 2023, 9-2 in 2024, and 9-3 in 2025, a combined 26-9 in three seasons as head coach. St. Mary’s School in Natchitoches named Carruth its coach on May 29.

Carruth, a former Captain Shreve tight end, said his family loved New Roads and had success there. With a second child on the way, he wanted to move closer to family, and St. Mary’s opened at the right time.

The 2025 Hornets beat Westminster Christian 46-18 in the Division IV Select playoffs, then lost 42-50 to Ascension Catholic. They also graduated three-year starting quarterback Jude Morrison and a large senior group. Carruth left a winning program, not a search committee’s emergency.

The Coordinator Resume Behind the Hire

Moreau is a Catholic High (Baton Rouge) graduate with a degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Until June, every paid football title on his sheet was an assistant’s.

MOREAU’S LOUISIANA STOPS

School Role What the staff posted
Teurlings Catholic Assistant football and wrestling State-title wrestling program
Catholic High, Baton Rouge Defensive backs, linebackers, special teams (5 years) 4 state title games, 2 titles, under Gabe Fertitta and David Simoneaux
Walker Defensive coordinator 10-3 in 2023, first quarterfinal, 28-2 over Northshore, 56-17 loss to Ruston
Acadiana Defensive coordinator under Doug Dotson 8-4 in 2025, 7-0 district champions

The Walker 2023 staff called that season the most successful in school history and said it doubled the program’s all-time playoff victories. At Acadiana, Dotson credited Moreau’s plan in a 21-14 district-title win over Carencro after an 0-3 start. After Moreau left for New Roads, Dotson called him a top-notch coach and said replacing him was a lot.

The Baton Rouge years close a loop. Simoneaux left Catholic of Pointe Coupee in 2021 for Catholic High, where Moreau was already on staff. Simoneaux’s New Roads run included a 2019 state title game. Moreau now sits in the job Simoneaux once held, with the AD title added.

He Brought a 2012 Hornet Back as Coordinator

On June 2 the school named Dylan Ramagos defensive coordinator. Ramagos is a Catholic of Pointe Coupee Class of 2012 graduate. He coached linebackers at Acadiana in 2025-26, on the same staff as Moreau, and he had already been the Hornets’ defensive coordinator in 2022-23.

His wife, Briana Ramagos, is on the faculty in elementary art and high school marketing. The hire is a homecoming and a staff raid at once. Moreau said in July that he walked in with an entirely new coaching staff, which is the other half of a first-year head coach’s clock.

Eight Seniors, Two Juniors and Two-Way Football

The school has no separate feeder. Students can stay on campus from PK3 through 12th grade, and Moreau said most of his players have been Hornets since kindergarten. His stated plan was to spend time on middle school kids, the weight room, and every sport they play, not only football.

WHAT MOREAU SAID HE WAS STARTING WITH

  • Senior class: Eight seniors, all expected to play, many on both lines.
  • Junior class: Only two juniors on the roster, so freshmen and sophomores play early.
  • Quarterback: Sophomores Michael Battiste and Gunner LeJeune replace Jude Morrison, with LeJeune also at safety and receiver.
  • Two-way rule: Nine offensive starters also start on defense, the same 11 with one or two exceptions.

He called that a relative problem, because everyone in Class 1A lives there. He also said the Hornets would not define success by a win or a loss, and that every week on the schedule was a well-coached group. Those lines were easy in July. They are the job in October.

The Hornets Opened 3-2 Before District Play

The first game of Moreau’s head-coaching life was a 14-34 home loss to Marksville on Sep. 4 at NRG Field. The next three went the other way, then Catholic-New Iberia ended the non-district run.

2026 NON-DISTRICT RESULTS

Date Opponent Site Result
Sep. 4 Marksville NRG Field L 14-34
Sep. 11 Vermilion Catholic Away W 34-7
Sep. 18 Episcopal Away W 25-17
Sep. 25 Many NRG Field W 32-14
Oct. 2 Catholic-New Iberia Away L 6-31

MaxPreps had the Hornets at No. 107 in Louisiana after that stretch. District play opens Oct. 9 at East Feliciana, then Varnado at home, with Kentwood, Riverside Academy, and Central Private still on the regular-season list Moreau read out in July.

THE OPENING LEDGER

  • Record: 3-2, 0-0 in District 9-1A.
  • Predecessor: Carruth’s three-year mark of 26-9.
  • Last complete season: 9-3, with a playoff win and a 42-50 exit against Ascension Catholic.
  • Roster math: 8 seniors, 2 juniors, two-way starters.

A 6-31 loss on Oct. 2 does not close a first season. It does show what the two-job hire looks like when the other select program has more answers than a young quarterback room.

New Roads Has Combined These Jobs Before

The dual title is not a stunt unique to Moreau. It is how this school has often staffed a small Class 1A athletic department.

WHO HELD THE WHISTLE IN NEW ROADS

  1. March 13, 2015: Rob Funderburk resigns as head football coach after a 31-35 run and stays on as athletic director.
  2. April 22, 2015: David Simoneaux is hired as football coach and later takes the Hornets to the 2019 state title game.
  3. March 2021: Simoneaux leaves for Catholic High in Baton Rouge. Vinnie Bullara, already upstairs as a chemistry and physics teacher, becomes head football coach and athletic director.
  4. 2023: Carruth takes the football job and goes 26-9 in three seasons.
  5. May 29, 2026: Carruth accepts the St. Mary’s job in Natchitoches.
  6. June 1, 2026: Moreau is named head football coach and athletic director, his first head-coaching job.

Bullara’s 2022 team went 10-2. The school has won with a combined office and with a football-only coach. What it had not done, until June, is hand both chairs to a man whose entire football career had been spent on someone else’s staff.

On Oct. 9 the Hornets open district play at East Feliciana. Moreau still has the football job, the high school AD title, a sophomore quarterback, and a calendar that does not pause for the other Hornet sports. That is the wager New Roads placed on June 1, and it is the one on the field.
