Tesla’s FSD v14 Lite Leaves Hardware 3 Owners Short
Tesla is sending FSD v14 Lite to Hardware 3 cars after saying those chips cannot do unsupervised driving, and owners are already filing refund claims.
Tesla began sending Full Self-Driving v14 Lite to Hardware 3 cars on June 29, 2026, the first FSD upgrade for about 4 million older vehicles in 14 months. Firmware 2026.20.5.1 went first to early-access Model 3 and Model Y cars. Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said the build distills Hardware 4’s v14 driving behavior into the older camera and computer setup.
The software is a real step up from the v12.6 branch those cars sat on. It is also named Lite, it still needs a watchful driver, and it arrived after CEO Elon Musk said Hardware 3 cannot do unsupervised Full Self-Driving.
A Lite Build Lands on Hardware 3
Elluswamy posted that FSD v14 Lite was rolling out to AI3 early-access customers and would move to more cars over the following weeks, once that first group’s drives were in. Tesla’s own notes say engineers “distilled the intelligence from HW4 V14 into HW3,” so the older computer could copy how the newer stack handles traffic, using Hardware 4 as a guide and bringing over reinforcement learning and offline models.
That is an engineering workaround, not a hardware upgrade. Hardware 3, also called AI3 inside Tesla, is the Autopilot computer fitted to most Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X cars built from 2019 through 2023. Hardware 4, or AI4, began showing up in new cars during 2023. For a year and more, the newer computer got the v14 series while the older one stayed frozen.
The June drop ended that freeze for Model 3 and Model Y. It did not put those cars on the same product Hardware 4 already runs. Tesla did not give the Lite build a decimal version number. The name itself is the split.
The Memory Limit Musk Put on Record
On Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call on April 22, Musk closed the unsupervised path on this computer in public.
Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised FSD. We did think at one point it would have that, but relative to Hardware 4, it has only one-eighth of the memory bandwidth of Hardware 4. And memory bandwidth is one of the key elements needed for unsupervised FSD.
Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla Q1 2026 earnings call
He said customers who bought FSD would get a discounted trade-in toward a car with AI4 hardware, or a computer swap that also requires new cameras. Doing that at service centers, he said, would be extremely slow, so Tesla would need microfactories in major metro areas, mini production lines to make the change. He added that converting Hardware 3 cars to Hardware 4 is what would let them join a robotaxi fleet.
THE HARDWARE PROMISE, THEN THE ADMISSION
- October 2016: Musk said cars leaving the factory already had the cameras and compute for Level 5, meaning hardware capable of driverless operation.
- 2019: Tesla’s Dutch product page told buyers every Tesla had the hardware needed to become fully self-driving in almost all circumstances through software.
- January 29, 2025: Musk said Tesla would have to replace Hardware 3 computers in cars where FSD was purchased, calling that the honest answer, and adding he was glad not that many people bought the package.
- April 22, 2026: He said Hardware 3 has one-eighth the memory bandwidth of Hardware 4 and cannot achieve unsupervised FSD.
Buyers who took the 2016-to-2024 hardware pitch paid extra for a package Tesla priced as high as $15,000. Lite is the software that computer can run. Unsupervised driving is the product that computer, on Tesla’s own telling, will never run.
June for the Model 3, September for S and X
The first Lite cars were not the flagships. Model 3 and Model Y on Hardware 3 took 2026.20.5.1 in late June. A wider North American push followed in July on 2026.20.6.11, after Elluswamy flagged 2026.20.6.10 as the likely wide-release candidate and Tesla issued a quick point fix. South Korea was an early market outside the United States.
Model S and Model X sat out both waves. At Tesla’s Cybercab launch, Elluswamy told automotive journalist Ryan McCaffrey, “Oh, I thought it was supposed to go out last week.” Early-access 2021-refresh Hardware 3 S and X cars then began pulling FSD v14.2 Lite on September 23, 2026, in 2026.27.10 and 2026.27.11. Pre-2021 S and X cars had not been shown taking that build.
THE HW3 V14 LITE WAVES
| Wave | Firmware | When | Which cars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early access | 2026.20.5.1 | June 29, 2026 | Hardware 3 Model 3 and Model Y |
| Wider North America | 2026.20.6.11 | July 21, 2026 | Hardware 3 Model 3 and Model Y |
| Flagship early access | 2026.27.10 and 2026.27.11 | September 23, 2026 | 2021-refresh Hardware 3 Model S and Model X |
Daily use on the older computer is slower than Hardware 4, which is what a distilled model on a thinner memory pipe should feel like. The leftover map is messier than the June headlines. Pre-refresh flagships were still waiting, and owners in markets that never got a confirmed Lite download were still asking whether their cars were even on the list.
What FSD v14 Lite Adds on Hardware 3
The official FSD v14 Lite release notes read like a compressed Hardware 4 feature list, with the supervision warnings left in place. FSD (Supervised) can start from Park, change lanes, take navigation forks, turn, and park. Tesla’s text is blunt: this feature does not make the vehicle autonomous, and the driver must remain attentive and ready to take over at any time.
FEATURES THAT CROSSED TO HARDWARE 3
- Start from Park: A button appears once the driver is seated, buckled, and the cabin camera is clear; the first Lite build still asked for a brake press to confirm.
- Parking and reverse: The car can shift to Reverse, back out, then go to Drive, with unparking added to the same stack.
- Arrival Options: Drivers pick Parking Lot, Street, Driveway, Parking Garage, or Curbside, and the car stores those choices per destination.
- Speed Profiles: Profiles stay available at all times, including a new SLOTH mode that is slower and more conservative than CHILL, with the right scroll wheel changing the profile rather than a precise speed offset.
- Smoother traffic work: Tesla lists better merges, forks, pedestrian interactions, traffic lights, and cut-ins, plus fewer false slowdowns and more consistent lane centering.
Later Lite point releases added phone-app path and Self-Driving labels, driving-streak screens, in-car FSD stats, and a toggle to skip the brake confirm. Those are convenience layers on a Level 2 system. They are not the unsupervised product the package name still sells.
Dutch Approval Stopped at Newer Computers
The legal fight in Europe did not wait for Lite. On April 10, 2026, the Dutch vehicle authority RDW granted Tesla a type approval for FSD (Supervised) under UN Regulation 171, the first such green light in the European Union, provisionally valid in the Netherlands. RDW later published an European type approval valid in the Netherlands note after ministers were questioned in parliament, stressing independent track and road tests.
That approved system is the Hardware 4 product. HW3 Claim, the owner register built by Dutch Tesla owner Mischa Sigtermans, states Tesla delivers the approved version on AI4 hardware and that Hardware 3 cars get a stripped-down v14 Lite. The campaign quotes Tesla’s 2019 Dutch page on hardware that would make the car fully self-driving in almost all circumstances, then sets that line against the April approval.
FSD Supervised as signed off in the Netherlands remains a driver-assistance system. The driver stays responsible. Hands-off time is allowed only while attention is monitored. That is the same supervision Lite still prints in the car. The difference is which computer is allowed to run the version the regulator actually tested.
Owners Are Building a Dutch Refund Claim
HW3 Claim is not a filed lawsuit. Its own FAQ says the case is in preparation for the Netherlands, two formal notices were sent and both were rejected by Tesla, and a foundation is being set up for a collective action under the Dutch WAMCA rules. Signing up is free and does not create a lawyer-client relationship. The site lists 8,367 verified participants, with its latest written update dated June 18, 2026.
The money theory has two tracks. Owners who paid separately for Full Self-Driving or Enhanced Autopilot want that add-on back, in full or in part, plus compensation for a self-driving promise baked into the car’s price. Owners who never bought the package are still invited in, on the narrower idea that part of the catalogue value rested on hardware Tesla said was enough. Sigtermans writes that the goal is money, not another empty delivery date, and that a factory hardware upgrade would be a bonus, not the plan.
In the United States, David Waller of Kentucky filed a federal complaint filed June 4 in the Northern District of California. He bought a 2020 Model S for $88,790 including options and paid $7,000 for Full Self-Driving Capability on June 29, 2020, then opted out of Tesla’s arbitration clause. The complaint leans on Musk’s April 22 line as the moment Tesla “finally admitted the truth,” and it notes the promised retrofits, microfactories included, have never been implemented. A separate California FSD class was already certified in 2025 and is on appeal. HW3 Claim points U.S. owners toward that local track rather than pretending a Dutch register replaces it.
Still No Shop for the Hardware Swap
Lite does not replace the computer. It squeezes a smaller model onto the computer Tesla now says is the wrong one for unsupervised driving. Tesla’s quarterly report for the period ended June 30, 2026, records 4.05 billion dollars of deferred revenue tied to internet connectivity, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) features and their upkeep, free Supercharging programs, and over-the-air software updates, compared with $3.87 billion at the end of 2025. That bundle is not an FSD-only pile of cash. It is still a reminder that customers paid up front for software Tesla continues to carry as an unfinished performance obligation.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The software path: Hardware 3 is receiving a distilled, supervised v14 Lite stack, not the Hardware 4 v14 series and not unsupervised FSD.
- The hardware path: Musk described a computer-and-camera swap, a discounted AI4 trade-in, and metro microfactories, with no public shop that performs that job as a Tesla program.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Who gets a free retrofit: Tesla has not published eligibility, price, or a city list for the microfactories.
- Whether Lite ends the claims: Dutch organizers are still gathering contracts; Waller’s case is at the complaint stage.
In August, developer Michal Gapinski, known for unofficial Tesla Android work, documented a Hardware 4 computer installed in a 2022 Model 3 that had shipped with Hardware 3, using adapters on the factory camera cables and some control-unit changes. That is a hobbyist proof of a mechanical path. It is not Tesla service.
Pre-2021 Hardware 3 Model S and Model X cars were still on the old FSD branch after the September flagship drip. Lite asks those drivers to keep watching the road, which is the same bargain Tesla sold as Full Self-Driving, now with the Lite label stamped on the box.
