LA Olympic Basketball Starts Two Days Before the Ceremony
FIBA moved 2028 Olympic basketball to July 12, two days before the opening, so no tip comes before noon and quarterfinals split.
Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will start on July 12, two days before the opening ceremony, FIBA said. The women’s group phase opens that Wednesday at Intuit Dome in Inglewood. The men follow on July 13, still a day before the July 14 ceremony.
The extra days are how the sport keeps every tip at noon or later and splits the quarterfinals across two days.
Why Games Start Before the Opening Ceremony
FIBA’s Executive Committee signed off on the revised calendar in Mies, Switzerland, on August 20, 2025. The governing body did not frame the move as a bigger opening-week festival. It framed it as recovery time and a hard floor on tip times.
This adjustment allows the Quarter-Finals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than 12:00 PM, enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters.

That noon rule is the product. A preliminary grid had already called for three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13. Sliding the first week forward is what makes those sessions, and the knockout days after them, fit without an 11 a.m. start.
Noon in Los Angeles is 9 p.m. in much of Europe, which is the window FIBA named when it listed broadcasters among the people the change helps. The same floor is 5 a.m. the next morning in eastern Australia. Players get a civilized wake-up. European television gets a live evening game. The ceremony is what moved out of the way.
LA28 later published a full competition grid in November 2025 that locked basketball at Intuit Dome from July 12 through July 30. The official Games window remains July 14 to 30. Full-court basketball will already have six games in the book by the time that window opens, then go dark on ceremony night.
Women Open the Tournament on July 12
The order is no longer a mystery. An IOC hospitality briefing says the women’s group phase tips off on 12 July 2028, with the men arriving on 13 July. FIBA’s own date sheet matches that split through the medal games.
THE 5X5 CALENDAR AT INTUIT DOME
| Round | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Group phase | July 12-20 | July 13-21 |
| Quarterfinals | July 22-23 | July 24-25 |
| Semifinals | July 26 | July 27 |
| Bronze medal game | July 28 | July 29 |
| Gold medal game | July 29 | July 30 |
Each gender still plays a 12-team group stage, then a knockout. What changes is the space around the quarterfinals. Women get July 22 and 23. Men get July 24 and 25. Semifinals sit on single days, with a rest day built in before the bronze games.
The women’s gold medal game is on July 29, which FIBA has already described as U.S. primetime. The men’s final is on July 30 and is listed as the last team-sport final of the Games, a few hours before the closing ceremony at the Coliseum. 3×3 is a separate outdoor draw. It runs July 16 to 22 at Valley Complex 3 in the Sepulveda Basin, with both medal games on July 22, so it starts after the flame and ends before the 5×5 knockouts.
Paris Waited a Day, Tokyo Waited Two
The last two Olympics treated the opening ceremony as the start of the basketball tournament, then paid for it with early tips and a one-day quarterfinal crush.
WHEN 5X5 STARTED AGAINST THE OPENING
| Games | Opening ceremony | First 5×5 games | Offset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo 2020 | July 23, 2021 | July 25 (men) | 2 days after |
| Paris 2024 | July 26, 2024 | July 27 (men) | 1 day after |
| Los Angeles 2028 | July 14, 2028 | July 12 (women) | 2 days before |
In Paris, men’s group games tipped as early as 11 a.m. local time, and all four men’s quarterfinals sat on August 6. The women opened a day later than the men and also played their four quarterfinals on a single date. Tokyo gave the men two days after the flame and still opened some sessions at 10 a.m. Japan time. 3×3 in Tokyo actually started on July 24, one day after the ceremony, because the new event was short enough to squeeze.
Los Angeles flipped the offset and borrowed a trick soccer has used for years: start the long tournament early, protect the knockout, and let the ceremony happen in the middle of group play. The no game will start earlier than noon line is the tell. FIBA is buying the start times Paris could not keep.
The Clippers’ Arena Hosts Every Full-Court Game
Every 5×5 game is booked for Intuit Dome, the Clippers’ home in Inglewood. LA28 shifted the sport there after the building opened, part of a plan to use the newest indoor arena in Inglewood instead of putting basketball downtown. 3×3 stays outdoors in the Valley. Gymnastics takes the older downtown arena.
The IOC’s first look at the building came when the Clippers opened the room in front of an 18,000-capacity Clippers arena crowd. The same briefing described a 1.1 million square foot complex that runs carbon-free on rooftop solar and battery storage, with enough stored power to operate off the grid for more than six hours. The Halo Board, a double-sided video ring over the floor, is the thing visiting teams will see first. The Wall is 51 uninterrupted rows.
INTUIT DOME ON OLYMPIC NIGHTS
- Capacity: About 18,000 for the Clippers opener the IOC used as its Games preview.
- Halo Board: Double-sided video ring over the court, billed as the largest of its kind in an arena.
- The Wall: 51 straight rows of seats, no cross aisle to break the noise.
- Power: Solar and batteries sized for more than six hours off the grid.
IOC President Thomas Bach called the new Los Angeles rooms impressive and said athletes can look forward to an extraordinary experience at LA28. Clippers guard James Harden, already a gold medalist, said of the building, “It’s cracking in here with the screen, the fans and the lights. I’m excited.” The opening ceremony itself is split between the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium, which sits in the same Inglewood zone. Basketball will be a short ride from part of the show and will not play that night.
Field Hockey and Cricket Start on July 12
Basketball is not sneaking out alone. Several other team sports were already on the pre-ceremony grid when FIBA moved, and the daily timetable now puts a full slate on the Wednesday before the flame.
SPORTS ON THE FLOOR BEFORE JULY 14
- July 12: Women’s basketball, women’s cricket, men’s field hockey, men’s handball, women’s rugby sevens, and men’s water polo.
- July 13: Men’s basketball joins, with more women’s basketball, plus baseball’s first games, women’s field hockey, women’s handball, women’s water polo, and more cricket and rugby sevens.
- July 10: Men’s soccer group play is already listed, two days before the first basketball tip.
- July 14 morning: Canoe slalom heats in Oklahoma City, 1,200 miles from the ceremony later that night.
The Oklahoma City session is the sharpest split. Heats are due to start hours before the opening in Los Angeles, on a whitewater course built for the Games. Soccer, cricket, and baseball stretch the map in other directions. Basketball at least stays in Inglewood. It just refuses to wait for the parade.
Once the dates locked, public argument about the calendar itself went quiet. The live fight moved to who will actually take the floor in a home women’s tournament and to 3×3, which grows from eight teams per gender to 12. The noon floor and the two-day quarterfinals are settled design. The rosters are not.
The Host Defends Eight Straight Women’s Golds
The United States is the defending champion in both 5×5 tournaments. The women have won eight consecutive Olympic gold medals. The men have won five in a row. Both streaks come to Inglewood as the host entries, with the women’s team first on the floor.
Each 5×5 draw still has 12 teams. For men, FIBA’s pathway fills a 12-team men’s Olympic field with seven qualifiers from the 2027 World Cup in Qatar, the United States as host, and four winners of Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. Those four last-chance events are dated June 26 to July 2, 2028, which leaves 10 days before the women open in Inglewood and 11 days before the men. For women, the 2026 World Cup in Germany feeds direct berths, and the United States is in as host.
3×3 gets the same 12-team size after LA28 raised the quota from eight. Only the United States is guaranteed a 3×3 place as host. The other 11 tickets per gender run through rankings and qualifying events in 2027 and 2028. That bigger outdoor field will already be done by the time the 5×5 quarterfinals start inside Intuit Dome.
The host can march on July 14 with group games already on the ledger. The women’s gold is still dated for July 29. The men’s gold is still the last team-sport final on July 30. FIBA got the noon starts and the split quarterfinals it asked for. The ceremony will arrive in the middle of the tournament that used to wait for it.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Does Basketball Start at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics?
Full-court women’s games open on Wednesday, July 12, 2028, and the men open on Thursday, July 13. There is no 5×5 session on Friday, July 14, the day of the opening ceremony at the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium. 3×3 basketball starts later, on July 16, at the outdoor Valley Complex 3 court in the Sepulveda Basin.
Why Is Olympic Basketball Starting Before the Opening Ceremony?
FIBA wanted quarterfinals spread over two days and a hard floor of 12:00 p.m. local for every tip, a contrast with Paris, where some group games started at 11 a.m. Moving the first week to July 12 and 13 is the calendar math that creates that space. Noon Pacific is 9 p.m. in much of Europe, which is why broadcasters sit in the same sentence as players and fans in the Mies release.
Where Will Basketball Be Played at the 2028 Olympics?
All 5×5 games are at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, the Clippers’ arena. 3×3 is not in that building. It is at Valley Complex 3, a temporary octagonal outdoor venue in the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, with both medal games on July 22.
How Many Teams Are in the 2028 Olympic Basketball Tournaments?
Each 5×5 tournament has 12 teams, the same size as Paris and Tokyo. Men’s remaining spots after the 2027 World Cup and the U.S. host berth go to four Olympic Qualifying Tournaments dated June 26 to July 2, 2028. 3×3 also has 12 teams per gender, up from eight in 2020 and 2024, with the United States in as host and 11 other places decided by rankings and qualifying events.
When Are the 2028 Olympic Basketball Gold Medal Games?
The women’s 5×5 final is on July 29. The men’s 5×5 final is on July 30, listed as the last team-sport final of the Games and scheduled a few hours before the closing ceremony. Bronze games sit on July 28 (women) and July 29 (men). 3×3 medals are decided earlier, on July 22.
By July 30 the men’s gold will already have been decided inside Intuit Dome, hours before the Coliseum closing. The tournament that used to wait for the flame will finish on the same night the Games do.
