Sheriff Country Season 2 Starts on Eva’s Forced Cartel Mission
Sheriff Country Season 2 premieres Oct. 9 as Eva Santos runs Mickey and Wes on a cartel case she staffed by hiding she is Mickey’s mother.
Morena Baccarin posted a get-ready video on June 9 from her first day back as Sheriff Mickey Fox. Sheriff Country Season 2 premieres Friday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. on CBS and Paramount+. Showrunner Matt Lopez has already explained the opening move: DEA deputy director Eva Santos (Rachel Ticotin) kept her identity off the table until Wes Fox walked through the door, because he would not have signed onto a Bulgarian cartel case if he had known she was Mickey’s mother.
The Instagram clip is the public restart. The season starts as a three-person unit nobody volunteered for.
The Season Opens on a Secret Eva Used as Leverage
Baccarin’s caption was blunt. “GRWM for my first day back on set filming Season 2 of Sheriff Country,” she wrote over a video that ran from her morning through the first hours back in front of the cameras.
Christopher Gorham, who plays Mickey’s ex-husband Travis Fraley, had already flagged the table read. “And just like that, we’re back! Sheriff Country season 2, day 1. See y’all real soon!” he posted on June 3. W. Earl Brown and Matt Lauria posted from set in the same stretch. The tone of those clips is easy. The plot they walked into is not.
Season 1 ended on May 22, 2026 with Wes, Mickey’s jailed father, identifying Santos as Maria Fox, the wife and mother he and Mickey had buried in their heads. Lopez said both of them had believed she was dead for 30 years. Late in the first season, Mickey even told the story of her mother dying of illness in the Edgewater County jail while awaiting trial. Wes visited the grave. Those beats were the cover Eva had lived under while she sat in the same town, running a corruption case that pointed at her own daughter.
Lopez has been following the hostility. People clocked Eva as the antagonist and said they hated her. He is using Season 2 to make that harder. Mickey starts the year angry at her. She will also have to admit that some of Eva’s steel looks like her own.
Why Wes Walked Into That Room
The finale did not freeze on a hug. It froze on a staffing decision. Eva needed Wes as a confidential informant inside a Bulgarian cartel moving into Edgewater, and she needed Mickey’s office on the same job. Mickey had already cut her father off after he went back to illegal growing. Lopez’s account of Eva’s timing is the whole machine.
Eva knew if she told Wes before Wes walked in that door, I think there’s no way he would’ve ever agreed to cooperate in this mission that the three of them are going to undertake at the top of Season 2 to take down this cartel.
Matt Lopez, Sheriff Country showrunner
Mickey did not walk in free either. After Eva killed dirty DEA agent Alec Kane (Wes Chatham) in the finale shootout, she sat Mickey down and threatened to expose the relationship with him. Alec had been Miranda Fraley’s enforcer, and he had pulled the wool over Mickey while she fell in love with him. The leak would have wrecked a sheriff who still has to face her town, and an election. Lopez maps the new chain of command in one line: Eva is the handler, and she is handling Mickey and Wes, the man Mickey swore she would never speak to again.
He has also said Eva was dealt a bad hand and played it the best she could, believing she was doing what was best for her daughter. Mickey was about 5 or 6 when Eva left. That is the origin story Lopez says viewers will not wait long to get, including why both Wes and Mickey were allowed to believe she was dead. It is also the reason the premiere cannot open as a clean reunion. The woman running the case is the woman who staged her own exit.
Mickey, Wes, and a Bulgarian Cartel
Lopez’s September preview put the aftershocks in order. Mickey spent the last stretch of Season 1 learning that her former sister-in-law, Miranda Fraley (Kelli O’Hara), was Edgewater’s drug kingpin; that Alec was Miranda’s man inside the DEA; and, in the last frames, that the deputy director across the table was her mother. Season 2, he said, comes in like it was shot out of a cannon. The premiere and the first few episodes are Mickey dealing with those hits, on the job and at home, while she swallows her feelings about Wes long enough to protect the town.
HOW THE TRIAD GOT BOXED IN
- Mickey Fox: Eva threatened to out the Alec relationship unless the sheriff’s office joined a joint cartel case with Wes as the inside man.
- Wes Fox: He agreed to be the informant before he saw Eva’s face, then found Maria Fox standing in the room as his handler.
- Eva Santos: She spent a season studying the kind of person her daughter had become, then put both Foxes on a mission they would have refused with full information.
Lopez called that mix delicious and also called it the engine out the gate. Wes will think he and Mickey are on the same page, both betrayed. Mickey will not let her father off that easy, and Lopez has said you can make the case that Wes’s betrayal was worse. They still have to work. Eva still has to run them. The cartel is the excuse that keeps the family in the same car.
Cyclone Puts a Neighboring Sheriff in the Room
The season opener is titled “Cyclone.” The logline has Mickey struggling to process a family shock while she races to save a troubled young woman whose slide into a criminal operation uncovers a wider threat to Edgewater. Lopez filled in the private clock. Season 2 starts pretty quickly after the finale. Boone (Matt Lauria) is coming out of the ICU after taking a bullet in that shootout. Mickey is still in the blast radius of the last episode, and they get thrown almost immediately into a case that spans a couple of early hours.
There is a small time jump, then a catch-up. Lopez said some hours pass between Wes telling Mickey “this is your mother” and the first frame of Season 2, and that the missing piece is the fun of the open. He refused a direct pickup on purpose. The scene begged for one, so the writers stepped off it, then they fill the gap.
Sheriff Jim Wade Comes In From the Next County
Ben McKenzie guest-stars in “Cyclone” as Sheriff Jim Wade, a neighboring sheriff called in to help Mickey, with secrets of his own. Lopez has known McKenzie a long time; he met Baccarin years ago through him. They tried to book him in Season 1 and lost him to a documentary. This time they got him. Lopez will only tease that Wade played an instrumental role in Skye’s life, that the friendship matters to Mickey, and that two sheriffs from adjoining counties may not see eye to eye on how to run a town.
On screen, that is also Baccarin and her husband sharing a frame for the first time on this series, after years as co-stars on Gotham. The booking is the easy photograph. Wade still walks into a department that is already carrying Eva, Wes, and a cartel brief.
The Hours After Wes Named Her
Boone starts as the rock. Lopez said the early going is Mickey and Boone at their best, a support system and a crime-fighting pair, and that the show will test whether any of the old heat is still there. In Season 1’s late episodes, Boone told Mickey he loved her, and she almost said it back before shutting it down because she was his boss and because she was with Alec. Alec is dead. Boone is out of the ICU. Eva is in the building. That is the stack “Cyclone” has to play in 60 minutes.
EARLY SEASON 2 AIR DATES
| Episode | Air date | What is set |
|---|---|---|
| Cyclone | Oct. 9, 2026 | Family fallout, a young woman in a criminal operation, Sheriff Jim Wade |
| Family Trust | Oct. 16, 2026 | Second Friday; title only so far |
| Ulysses | Oct. 23, 2026 | A dangerous new drug spreading through Edgewater’s college community |
Amanda Arcuri (Skye Fraley) and Ian Quinlan (Deputy Hank Iglesias) are series regulars now, promoted from recurring. Michele Weaver is back as Deputy Cassidy Campbell. Rachel Ticotin is back as Eva, which means Maria Fox is no longer a last-scene trick. Fire Country’s Max Thieriot is set to guest. Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed executive produce with Lopez, Max Thieriot, Joan Rater, and Tony Phelan for Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS Studios.
CBS Locked Season 2 After 7.6 Million Viewers
CBS renewed the series on Dec. 3, 2025, months before the finale twist even landed. The network’s own Nielsen live plus 7-day multiplatform figure averaged 7.6 million viewers, up 33% in the Friday 8 p.m. slot against the S.W.A.T. season average it replaced. CBS billed Sheriff Country as the No. 2 new broadcast series, behind Boston Blue, and said both shows had made it a time-period winner at 8 p.m. Fridays. Since the two series premiered on Oct. 17, 2025, the network said it had won every Friday night in total viewers.
Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, called them instant hits across broadcast and streaming and pointed at character-driven stories and the people on both sides of the camera. That is the commercial reason a soapy mother reveal gets to run a cop show. The first season already held the hour. Season 2 is the bet that a coerced family can keep it.
THE SEASON 2 CLOCK SO FAR
- 7.6 million: CBS’s Nielsen live plus 7-day multiplatform average at the Dec. 3, 2025 renewal.
- 20 episodes: The full first season now sitting on Paramount+.
- June 3 and June 9: Gorham’s day-1 table read, then Baccarin’s get-ready video from set.
- Oct. 9, 8 p.m.: Season 2’s Friday slot on CBS, with live and next-day streams on Paramount+.
The show is the first spinoff in the Fire Country franchise. Official materials still introduce Mickey as the stepsister of Cal Fire division chief Sharon Leone, Diane Farr’s character. That family tree is how Edgewater got a sheriff series in the first place. Eva’s return adds a blood parent Mickey did not know she still had, on top of the step-family the franchise already sold.
Skye and Travis Inherit a Company Under Investigation
The cartel brief is not the only hangover. Miranda’s fall left Fraley Horizons, a founding-family company in Edgewater, under a DEA cloud. Lopez said the premiere finds the firm in a huge investigation. To what extent was it a criminal enterprise? Did Skye know? Did Travis know? The promise they made to employees at the end of Season 1 will be hard to keep.
Gorham’s Travis is a lawyer and Skye’s father, and the two of them took control after Miranda’s arrest. Arcuri’s promotion to regular puts Skye, a former addict trying to stay clean, in the weekly engine rather than in visits. Quinlan’s Hank stays in Mickey’s department, still tied to Cassidy. Lopez’s larger read on Season 1 was that Mickey spent the year trying to rebuild a frayed family, with Wes, Skye, Boone, and Cassidy all strained in the pilot, and that those pieces were largely restored, in fits. Season 2 tests that repair by dropping Maria Fox into the middle of it and by putting the Fraley company on a federal clock at the same time.
Cassidy, Weaver’s deputy, comes back from a stretch away with a clearer sense of why the job is worth it, Lopez said, after a case that confirmed her sister’s murder and opened a path with her mother. Hank is in that orbit. The department is still Mickey’s, and Eva is now the federal voice inside it.
Sheriff Country Keeps the Friday Slot It Already Won
FROM RENEWAL TO AIR
- December 3, 2025: CBS orders Season 2, citing the 7.6 million Nielsen live plus 7-day multiplatform average and Friday wins.
- May 22, 2026: Season 1 ends with Eva killing Alec, Boone shot, Miranda arrested, and Wes naming Santos as Maria Fox.
- June 3, 2026: Gorham posts the Season 2 day-1 table read.
- June 9, 2026: Baccarin posts the get-ready video from her first day back on camera.
- October 9, 2026: “Cyclone” airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, with Paramount+ carrying it live on Premium and the next day on both plans.
The Friday stack stays the same. Sheriff Country holds 8 p.m., with Fire Country and Boston Blue behind it. Paramount+ still has all 20 episodes from Season 1 for anyone who missed the jail-cell story Mickey used to tell about her mother. CBS has not posted a Season 2 episode count. Season 1 ran 20.
The get-ready video made the restart look like hair, coffee, and a drive to set. Lopez has already described the room those people are walking into. Eva is the handler. Mickey has to work with the father she wanted gone. Wes has to take orders from the woman he buried. The Bulgarian cartel is the case that makes all three of them stay. “Cyclone” is the first hour in which that arrangement has to function as police work.
