Google Holds Spark and Pics for the Pro Plan

Google on September 9, 2026 put voice in Gmail on its $4.99 Google AI Plus plan, while Pics, Sheets canvas, and Gemini Spark stay on Pro. Vikas Kansal, Group Product Manager for AI Subscriptions, framed the drop as help for a to-do list, then tagged almost every new tool to a paid rung.

Eligible college students can still claim a free year, but the United States gets Pro and most other markets get Plus, so the same campus offer does not unlock the same agent. After that year the plan bills unless it is cancelled.

August and September, Packed Into One Post

Kansal’s note is a shopping page. Canvas shipped in mid-August, the student offer in late August, Pics on September 1, and voice plus Photos-in-Spark on September 3. The September 9 post collects those launches, lists the new features in Google AI plans, and points readers to paid tiers.

Google already cut Ultra at I/O on May 19, 2026, launching a $100 Ultra plan and lowering the top Ultra plan to $200 from $250. Spark began there, then moved down to Pro. The fall recap does not change those prices. It shows which chores still require the $19.99 rung.

Voice on Plus Stops Short of Docs

Yulie Kwon Kim, VP of Product for Google Workspace, launched the voice modes on September 3 after previewing Gemini Audio models at I/O. Gmail Live lets you ask the inbox a spoken question, such as a school event or a flight detail, and hear an answer with sources on screen. Keep Live takes a spoken brain dump and turns it into lists and notes without a typed prompt.

Gmail Live and Keep Live are open to AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra. Docs Live, the mode that drafts a document from a spoken dump and can pull from Gmail, Drive, Chat, and the web, is Pro and Ultra only. That is the first upsell in the recap: Plus can talk to mail and notes, and Pro can talk a file into existence. Kim said the same voice tools are coming to Workspace business customers.

Google Pics Inside Docs and Slides

Meg Whittenberger, Google Pics Product Manager, said the app is rolling out over coming weeks to all Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and to most Workspace business customers. It is a standalone editor at pics.new and a panel inside Docs and Slides, with Drive due in the following weeks. Plus does not get it. The pitch is posters, social posts, and illustrations without exporting to another design tool, using Google Pics image creation and editing on top of Nano Banana.

Whittenberger wrote that millions of people already touch billions of images a month inside Workspace, which is why Pics sits in the doc instead of a separate tab. Rapid Release Workspace domains started September 1, and Scheduled Release domains start September 15. Eligible business plans are Business Standard and Plus and Enterprise Standard and Plus, plus the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. Generative use is metered.

WHAT PICS CAN EDIT

• Object cuts: Isolate one object, transform it, and leave the rest of the frame alone, including several edits in one pass.
• Type in the picture: Change or translate text inside an image without swapping the font or breaking the layout.
• Share and iterate: Generate several options from one prompt, then hand the file to a teammate to keep editing.
• Output size: Crop for web, social, print, or digital, and upscale to 2K or 4K.

Pics is the Canva-shaped hole in Workspace, and it is priced like one. A Plus subscriber who only wanted voice still has to jump to $19.99 Pro to make the poster in the same doc.

Ask Gemini, Get a Seating Chart

Sheets canvas is the tool in this recap that changes the object, not the input method. Eric Birnbaum, Director of Product Management for Google Sheets, described it as a read-write layer on top of the grid. You type a prompt such as “create a visual study tracker,” and Gemini builds a layout you can click, drag, and share as a tab. Edits in the canvas write back to the sheet, and sheet edits show up on the canvas.

Google’s own examples are a study tracker, a fantasy football roster board, and a wedding seating chart you drag guests around on. Chandu Thota, VP of engineering for Google Workspace, said Gemini 3.7 Flash is the model behind the first wave. Birnbaum’s post says no formulas and no code are required, and follow-up prompts can change layout, design, and behavior. The canvas is Sheets canvas interactive mini-apps in English, worldwide, for Pro and Ultra, and it is rolling out to Business and Enterprise Standard and Plus plus AI Pro for Education.

That is the upgrade people will actually open every day, because a seating chart or a homework board is a job, not a demo. Voice in Docs is handy. A sheet that behaves like a small app is a reason to stay on Pro after a student year ends.

Spark Now Runs Chrome and Photos

Gemini Spark is the 24/7 agent Google added at I/O for Ultra in the United States, then opened to Pro in the United States on July 23 and to Pro in 160-plus additional countries on July 30. Kansal’s recap adds two connections: Chrome and Google Photos, both listed as Pro and Ultra in the United States. Spark can already work in Workspace, Search, and a remote browser. Chrome auto browse lets it use logged-in accounts and saved passwords, with the person still approving payments and other sensitive steps.

Google’s July 30 examples were apartment viewings and flight research that starts a booking. The agent hands the session back before money moves, and Google says it is built to resist prompt injection. Auto browse remains a United States desktop Chrome feature even though Spark itself is wider. Josh Woodward, VP for Google Labs and the Gemini app, said in July that Spark could open and edit Docs, read comments in Sheets and Slides, run more than 50 percent faster, and work across several sources at once, with Pro access then still on the way.

Photos is the consumer hook. On September 3, Google Photos said Spark can take a library from a single prompt: clean vacation shots into a shared album and email a recap, turn a whiteboard snap into a team mail, or read an event flyer, check the calendar, and add the date. Shimrit Ben-Yair, who leads Google Photos, posted the same hook the recap now cites.

The useful Photos jobs are the repeating ones, such as a Sunday pass over the kids’ shots, a shared album, and a draft recap for grandparents, not a one-time filter. That work is still English-only and United States-only on Pro and Ultra, and Google Photos said the connect option would appear over the following weeks, so some subscribers still will not see it on September 9. People outside that window get a recap that names an agent they cannot run on Chrome or Photos.

What US Students Get for a Year

Shen’s August 19 offer is the fill line for this funnel. Eligible U.S. college students get one year of Google AI Pro free, listed at $19.99 a month, which is $239.88 of list price. That year includes 4x Gemini usage versus non-AI subscribers, Spark, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage, and Google Health Premium. Eligible students in 140-plus other markets get Plus, listed at $4.99 a month after the trial, which is $59.88 of list price, with Gemini Omni, 2x usage versus non-AI subscribers, and 400 GB of storage. Canada, Macau, Hong Kong, Bolivia, Albania, and Tunisia are called out with the United States as markets that do not use that Plus student path.

A U.S. student on the free Pro year can use Docs Live, Pics, canvas, and Spark. A student on Plus cannot. Both offers need a valid payment method, run through SheerID, and must be redeemed by December 31, 2026. Unless cancelled earlier, Pro then bills $19.99 a month and Plus bills $4.99 a month or the local equivalent. Google is also selling a Pro plus YouTube Premium bundle at up to 70 percent off in select markets, for up to four years while student status holds, not on school-issued accounts.

THE CAMPUS SPLIT

The Gemini app also opened a student hub at gemini.google.com/students, with study notebooks that were launched in June, flashcards, quizzes, interactive 3D visuals, and Deep Research inside Gemini Live. Those study tools are rolling out to signed-in consumer accounts, with school-issued accounts following, and they are separate from the paid-tier gates on Pics, canvas, and Spark.

The $4.99 Plan Versus the $19.99 Plan

Google’s public grid of what is included in AI subscriptions still sells storage and usage first: Plus at $4.99 with 400 GB and 2x limits, Pro at $19.99 with 5 TB and 4x limits, Ultra from $100 with 20 TB and 5x Pro usage, and top Ultra at $200 with 20x Pro usage. The September recap adds a second grid on top of that, and it is the one that decides whether a to-do list actually leaves the chat window.

NEW CHORES BY PLAN

Ultra still buys more headroom, YouTube Premium on that rung, and the higher usage caps from May. It is no longer the only way to get Spark. Pro is now the plan that holds the agent, the image editor, the spreadsheet mini-app, and spoken drafting in Docs. Plus is the plan that can talk to Gmail and Keep. The student year is how Google puts a payment card under that Pro stack before December 31, then starts the meter if no one cancels.
