James Scanlon Has 27 Gibraltar Caps and No Premier Minute

James Scanlon has 27 Gibraltar caps and six goals after a Malta equaliser, yet no Premier League appearance since leaving United.

James Scanlon scored a solo equaliser for Gibraltar against Malta on 1 October, his sixth international goal and still without a Premier League minute. The Arsenal academy winger, who turned 20 during this camp, now has 27 caps for a country he qualifies for through his mother.

His younger brother Luca, 17 and at Burnley, has four senior caps of his own. A year after they shared a World Cup qualifier, the international CV is fat and the club path is still youth football.

James Scanlon’s Solo Run Buys Gibraltar a Point

Gibraltar went to Ta’ Qali 1-0 down in the 61st minute of a Nations League D match. Scanlon picked up a loose ball near halfway, beat two challenges, and hit a shot that deflected over Henry Bonello. Malta 1-1 Gibraltar. It was his first full 90 minutes of the window.

Arsenal called it a superb solo goal in their 1-1 draw, after he dribbled past three players before the deflection. Gibraltar had opened the break with a 0-0 friendly against Sao Tome and Principe, Scanlon on for 45 minutes, then a 0-0 Nations League draw with Andorra in which he played 78. Two blanks, then a point on the road against the side that had been sitting top of the group.

The Gibraltar FA posted him talking through that Malta finish on 3 October.

Four of his six senior goals have come in 2026, including a brace in a 4-0 friendly with the British Virgin Islands on 3 June and an equaliser in a 4-1 win over the Cayman Islands three days later. The finishing run is real. So is the other column: zero competitive minutes for Manchester United’s first team, zero for Arsenal’s.

JAMES SCANLON’S SIX GIBRALTAR GOALS

  1. 8 September 2024: Opens his senior account in a 2-2 Nations League draw with Liechtenstein, aged 17 years and 346 days, the youngest scorer in Gibraltar history and in the competition.
  2. 9 June 2025: Scores in the 23rd minute at Torsvollur to put Gibraltar 1-0 up in a World Cup qualifier the Faroe Islands win 2-1.
  3. 3 June 2026: First of two in a 4-0 friendly win over the British Virgin Islands at Europa Point.
  4. 3 June 2026: Second of that brace, Gibraltar’s fourth on the night.
  5. 6 June 2026: Equaliser in a 4-1 friendly win over the Cayman Islands.
  6. 1 October 2026: Solo equaliser in the 1-1 Nations League draw with Malta in Ta’ Qali.

The Liechtenstein record still sits on the first of those six. Tjay De Barr held it before him. Scanlon broke it before he had played a senior club league match.

The Night Luca Replaced His Older Brother

On 8 September 2025 at Europa Sports Park, Gibraltar lost 0-1 to the Faroe Islands in front of 1,603 people. Martin Agnarsson scored in the 68th minute. In the 82nd, Scott Wiseman, the Gibraltar head coach, sent on Luca Scanlon for James. Luca was 16 years and 57 days old. He had travelled to support his brother. Wiseman had asked him to train with the senior group, then promoted him from the under-21s.

It was a shock because I wasn’t expecting it. I came on for him, which he wasn’t too happy about.

Luca Scanlon, Gibraltar winger

James recovered quickly enough to say the dressing room already knew what Luca could do. Burnley, who had taken the younger brother into their academy that March, called him the youngest Burnley player to win a senior cap. A year on, that swap is still the photograph. It is also the night Luca replaced James in a qualifier Gibraltar did not get a point from.

They had not shared a team since Sutton Bonington Primary School. James is a right-footed attacker who plays off the left. Luca is the reverse, a left-footer used on the right. About 30 relatives and friends usually turn up when Gibraltar play at home. Childhood holidays were on the Rock. The international shirts arrived long before either of them kicked a first-team ball for a club.

Arsenal Paid for the Caps United Never Used

James joined Manchester United from Derby County in February 2021, became a first-year scholar in July 2023, and signed his first professional deal on 23 May 2024. He sat in a senior United matchday squad once, for a Europa League tie with Real Sociedad on 13 March 2025. He did not come on. On 2 February 2026 he went to League Two Swindon Town on loan and scored once in six league games as Swindon finished ninth. United never used him in a Premier League match.

Arsenal confirmed the signing on 29 August 2026, listing him among academy additions, and noted that he had already earned 24 senior caps for his country. He wears 63. He told the club his family had come with him on the day. He also said he is a creative player who likes to score and assist. The international games were the experience Arsenal wrote down. The first-team door was not part of the announcement.

From Old Trafford the move reads as academy surplus. From Europa Point it reads as a regular starter changing clubs. Both can be true at once, and that is the odd shape of the career: a 20-year-old with 27 senior internationals who still has to knock on an under-21 door in north London. United fans who watched him leave said the Gunners had signed a player their own under-21s had not required. Arsenal fans who watched the Malta run now want him in the domestic cups. Neither club has put him in a Premier League eleven.

THE BROTHERS AT CLUB AND COUNTRY

Player Age Club Senior league games Gibraltar caps Gibraltar goals
James Scanlon 20 Arsenal 6 27 6
Luca Scanlon 17 Burnley 0 4 0

James’s six league games are the Swindon loan. Arsenal’s senior column is still a zero, as United’s was. Luca’s senior club column is a zero too. The caps column is where the brothers already live as men.

Zero Points From Eight World Cup Qualifiers

Gibraltar’s 2026 World Cup group was Croatia, Czechia, the Faroe Islands and Montenegro. The FIFA World Cup European qualifying standings show Gibraltar last, on zero points from eight games, three scored and 28 conceded. Croatia took 22 points and went to the finals. Czechia took 16 and went to the play-offs. The Faroes, the side that beat Gibraltar twice, finished third on 12.

GROUP L, FINAL

Team P W D L GF GA Pts
Croatia 8 7 1 0 26 4 22
Czechia 8 5 1 2 18 8 16
Faroe Islands 8 4 0 4 11 9 12
Montenegro 8 3 0 5 8 17 9
Gibraltar 8 0 0 8 3 28 0

The three Gibraltar goals were Dan Bent’s 13th-minute strike in a 3-1 loss in Montenegro on 22 March 2025, James’s 23rd-minute effort in Torshavn, and Liam Jessop’s 20th-minute goal in a 1-2 home defeat to Montenegro on 14 November. In between sat a 0-4 with Czechia and a 0-7 with Croatia, both staged at the Algarve, then the 0-1 on Luca’s debut night, a 3-0 loss in Varazdin, and a 6-0 in Olomouc on 17 November that closed the campaign.

James has already played Czechia and Croatia as a teenager, including nights against Luka Modric. He has a draw with Wales on his record. None of that moved Gibraltar off the bottom of Group L. The brothers made history in a shirt. The table did not notice.

How a Midlands Family Qualified for Gibraltar

Both brothers were born in Leicester and raised in the East Midlands. They qualify because their mother, Gabriella Scanlon, was born in Gibraltar. She is a former sprinter who jointly holds the territory’s women’s 4x100m relay record, née Falero, and she met their father, Rob Scanlon, a British Universities 1500m champion, while studying at Loughborough. James went to an England camp and still chose the Rock, later saying men’s football at 17 was the point of the call-up.

Playing men’s football was an important factor in me playing with them so young. To do things that not many players ever have managed to do, play so many games internationally so young, it’s been really valuable for me.

James Scanlon, Gibraltar winger

Gibraltar is UEFA’s smallest member association. It played its first official match in November 2013, a 0-0 with Slovakia, joined UEFA that year and FIFA in 2016, and still fills squads with dual nationals raised in England. Jansen Moreno, then head of youth development, had the Scanlons in talks early. Wiseman, a former Gibraltar player, took the senior side through qualifying and now holds a four-year contract as head coach. FIFA also put him on its Technical Development Committee for 2025 to 2029.

James said last autumn that the association kept looking for ways to improve while he was in it. The player pool is deeper than it was a decade ago. The qualifying record in this cycle was still eight defeats. Dual-national teenagers from English academies give Gibraltar a different kind of athlete. They have not yet given it a point in a World Cup group.

Luca Scanlon Still Waits on Club Senior Minutes

Luca left Nottingham Forest for United in 2021 when the family moved, spent four years there with James, and joined Burnley in March 2025. He played in the Lancashire Senior Cup, including the final against Bolton Wanderers, and has since appeared for Burnley’s under-18s and under-21s. Burnley posted him again in April 2026 after he took senior minutes for Gibraltar against Latvia. In June he came off the bench for 20 minutes against the British Virgin Islands and 22 against the Cayman Islands, the same window in which James scored three times.

LUCA SCANLON’S STEPS

  • Forest to United: He followed James to Carrington in 2021, then left for Burnley in March 2025 in search of games.
  • Senior debut: 16 years and 57 days old, 82nd minute, Faroe Islands at home, 0-1, 8 September 2025.
  • Under-21s: 72 minutes against Scotland and 55 against Azerbaijan in the 2027 under-21 Euro qualifiers in October and November 2025.
  • Four caps, no goal: Faroe Islands, Latvia, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, with club football still at under-18 and under-21 level.

He told James last year that one of them would probably hope the other hit 40 and could not move, because the cap race would hurt if either got injured. James said he needed every cap he could get. Luca said the head start was fine, and that he was younger. James now leads 27-4. The younger brother is still growing into shirts. Club football has not caught the international one for him either.

Vaduz Hosts Gibraltar After the Malta Point

Gibraltar face Liechtenstein in a friendly in Vaduz on 5 October, the last game of this camp, with Scanlon in the squad. Liechtenstein is the same association he scored against on 8 September 2024, when he was 17 years and 346 days old and still on United’s books. He will go back to Arsenal’s under-21s after it. Luca will go back to Burnley’s youth sides.

The brothers already have something most academy wingers never get: men’s internationals, a shared cap, and a family record that runs through a relay baton as much as a football. James also has the stranger line on a 20-year-old’s file, 27 caps and six goals, and no Premier League minute to put next to them.
