Netflix acquires Por for digital streaming after theatrical run

The campus action drama starring Arjun Das and Kalidas Jayaram will be available on the OTT platform in May 2024.

Por, the latest Tamil film directed by Bejoy Nambiar, is a campus-bound action drama that revolves around two best friends, Prabhu and Yuva, who become enemies over a cultural festival. The film explores various themes such as student activism, caste, queerness, mental health, and politics, as the protagonists clash with each other and a sinister political party. The film, which released in theatres on March 1, 2024, has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.

The film features Arjun Das and Kalidas Jayaram in the lead roles, along with Sanchana Natarajan, TJ Bhanu, Amrutha Srinivasan, Jeeva Subramanian, Dev Ramnath, Bala Suresh Babu, and others in supporting roles. The film is also a bilingual, and has been released in Hindi as Dange, with a different cast consisting of Harshvardhan Rane and Ehan Bhatt.

Netflix bags the post-theatrical rights of Por

According to sources, Netflix has secured the digital streaming rights of Por, and the film will be available on the OTT platform after its theatrical run. The film is expected to stream on Netflix in May 2024, after a minimum gap of four weeks from its theatrical release, as per the usual norm. Netflix is yet to make an official announcement regarding the same.

Netflix has also been investing in original and exclusive content from India, such as Sacred Games, Delhi Crime, Ludo, AK vs AK, The White Tiger, and more. Netflix has also acquired several films that skipped theatrical release due to the pandemic, such as Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Tribhanga, The Girl on the Train, and Pagglait.

Bejoy Nambiar: A versatile filmmaker with a distinct style

Bejoy Nambiar is a filmmaker who is known for his experimental and unconventional style of storytelling. He made his debut with the critically acclaimed Hindi thriller Shaitan in 2011, and followed it up with the neo-noir David in 2013, which was also a bilingual in Hindi and Tamil. He then directed the Malayalam-Tamil anthology film Solo in 2017, which featured four stories based on the elements of fire, water, earth, and wind.

Por marks Bejoy’s comeback to theatres after seven years, as he has been focusing on web series and short films in the meantime. He has directed series such as Kaala, The Fame Game, and Sweet Kaaram Coffee, which have been streamed on various platforms. He has also written and directed short films such as Reflections, Dobaara, and Flip.

Por is written and directed by Bejoy Nambiar, with additional writing by Mithila Hegde, Francis Thomas, and Neil Julian Balthazar. The dialogues are penned by Vignesh Srikanth. The film is produced by T-Series and Bejoy Nambiar. The cinematography is done by Jimshi Khalid and Presley Oscar D’Souza, and the editing is by Priyank Prem Kumar.
