Grotesquerie: Ryan Murphy’s new horror series to start shooting in LA

The creator of American Horror Story and Feud is back with a new FX show starring Niecy Nash-Betts, Courtney B. Vance, and Lesley Manville.

Grotesquerie is a new horror drama series created by Ryan Murphy, the prolific writer, director, and producer behind several hit shows such as Glee, The Politician, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Feud. The plot of the series is currently under wraps, but Murphy posted a teaser of the project on his Instagram last month, featuring the voice of Niecy Nash-Betts on a chilling phone call. The character speaks of a crime scene, a shift, and an evil that surrounds her, and begs the unknown receiver to come back, saying, “It’s not getting better. And I keep needing to hear your answers, because something’s happening around us, and nobody sees but me.”

The series is expected to premiere this fall on FX, and will mark the first project between Murphy and FX under his new deal with Disney. Murphy has been working with FX since 2003, when he produced Nip/Tuck, and has since delivered several acclaimed and award-winning shows for the network.

Who are the stars of Grotesquerie?

Grotesquerie features a star-studded cast, including Emmy winners Niecy Nash-Betts and Courtney B. Vance, and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville. Nash-Betts, who recently won an Emmy for her role in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, another Murphy production, will play the lead role of a woman who is caught up in a mysterious and terrifying situation. Vance, who won an Emmy for his portrayal of Johnnie Cochran in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, will play her husband, a successful lawyer who is hiding a dark secret. Manville, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Phantom Thread, will play a powerful and ruthless politician who is involved in a sinister conspiracy.

The rest of the cast has not been announced yet, but knowing Murphy’s penchant for working with the same actors across his projects, we can expect some familiar faces from his previous shows to join the ensemble.

When and where will Grotesquerie be filmed?

According to sources, Grotesquerie is set to commence filming in Los Angeles, California, in April. The city has been the primary filming location for many of Murphy’s shows, such as Nip/Tuck, Glee, The Politician, and American Horror Story. Los Angeles has also hosted the shooting of some of the biggest films of 2023, such as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Some of the other projects filmed in the region include Sofia Vergara’s Griselda and Zendaya’s Euphoria.

Grotesquerie is written and directed by Ryan Murphy, with additional writing by Jon Robin Baitz and Joseph Baken. The series is produced by T-Series and Murphy. The cinematography is done by Jimshi Khalid and Presley Oscar D’Souza, and the editing is by Priyank Prem Kumar.
