San Antonio Tech Fuel Pitch Competition Returns With $100K In Prizes

After two quiet years, San Antonio’s startup scene is firing up again. Tech Bloc has revived its flagship Tech Fuel pitch event and the popular Tech Day conference. Fresh funding from Bexar County and new leadership under Beto Altamirano signal strong support for local innovation at a key moment.1

The pitch finals happen April 20 at UTSA’s downtown campus. Tech Day follows on April 21. These free and accessible events could help the next big idea from San Antonio take off.

New Leadership Gives Tech Bloc Fresh Momentum

Beto Altamirano took over as CEO of Tech Bloc in September 2025. The entrepreneur and former mayoral candidate also leads Irys Technologies, a local cybersecurity company. He treats the Tech Bloc role as a part-time commitment focused on building the broader ecosystem.

Altamirano brings a clear three-part plan. He wants to channel more direct investment into early-stage companies. He aims to showcase San Antonio’s strengths in areas like cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, and biosciences. He also plans to push AI education so more residents and workers can participate in the tech economy.

This vision arrives after a leadership transition that paused the big events in 2025. The return shows resilience. Tech Bloc formed in 2015 when Uber and Lyft nearly pulled out of the market. Local tech leaders stepped up then to protect jobs and services. That same community spirit drives the organization today.

The goal remains simple: help good ideas grow right here in San Antonio.

Tech Fuel 2026 Features Five Strong Finalists Competing For Cash

More than 80 startups applied this year. Judges narrowed the field to 25 semi-finalists. Now five finalists will pitch live for a share of $100,000 in non-dilutive prizes.3

Here are the teams taking the stage:

  • ComeBack Mobility uses real-time biomechanical data to make rehabilitation safer and faster.
  • Freyya delivers data-driven solutions for women’s pelvic health.
  • Openlane provides an open-source AI platform that speeds up regulatory compliance.
  • Bytewhisper Security turns complex security policies into clear, actionable intelligence quickly.
  • RentBamboo automates the entire leasing process so real estate teams can scale efficiently.

Each finalist already received $2,500 to support their preparation. They also completed a three-day bootcamp at Geekdom to refine their pitches and strategies.

The live finals run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on April 20 at UTSA’s San Pedro I building. Five judges, including venture capitalists and experienced founders, will watch 5-minute pitches followed by Q&A.

The grand prize winner takes home $50,000 with no strings attached. Second place earns $20,000, third place gets $10,000, and an honorable mention receives $7,500. This structure lets founders keep full ownership while gaining critical capital to hire talent, build products, or reach customers.

Tech Day Delivers Free Panels And Networking The Next Day

Tech Day opens to everyone on April 21 at the Boeing Center at Port San Antonio. The free event features more than 30 speakers across three tracks focused on startup growth, artificial intelligence, and emerging industries.

Attendees can join panels, watch demos, and connect with founders, investors, and local business leaders. The theme “Invented Here” celebrates ideas born in San Antonio, often paired with the phrase #HechoEnSA.

Organizers designed the day to spark real conversations. Participants will gain practical insights they can apply immediately. Registration covers both days and remains open now.

This is a rare chance to see the local tech community at full strength without any cost.

Events Build On Strong History Of Economic Impact

Tech Fuel has delivered results over the years. The program has distributed more than $700,000 in prizes since it began. Past participants have raised an additional $12.3 million in follow-on funding, creating jobs and activity across Bexar County.1

Past winners include Betty’s Co., which claimed the top prize in 2021. Many finalists stay active and continue growing their businesses locally. Of the 30 finalists since 2019, more than half remain operational while others have exited successfully or evolved.

Bexar County approved $200,000 for the 2026 program on March 10. Half supports prizes while the rest covers workshops, programming, and logistics. Private sponsors added another $50,000. Commissioner Grant Moody highlighted the county’s role in creating conditions where businesses can succeed.

These numbers matter because they show a clear path. Prize money gives startups runway. Exposure connects them with investors and mentors. The events strengthen the entire ecosystem.

San Antonio already boasts advantages in defense tech, health innovation, and logistics. Programs like Tech Fuel help translate those strengths into new companies and opportunities for residents.

San Antonio Positions Itself As A Practical Tech Hub

The revival of these events comes as artificial intelligence and other technologies reshape industries. Altamirano’s focus on AI literacy could help prepare the local workforce. His emphasis on highlighting existing sectors builds on what already works here instead of chasing trends blindly.

For aspiring founders, the message is direct. You do not need to move to a coastal city to find support. Local resources exist and they are growing. For the broader community, these gatherings create pride and possibility.

The next week will determine this year’s winners. Yet the bigger story is the continued investment in San Antonio’s innovative spirit. When local leaders back events like these, they bet on the people who live and work here every day.

The tech scene here has always been about practical solutions to real problems. Tech Fuel and Tech Day reinforce that approach while opening doors for new voices.

San Antonio’s story of invention continues. These events remind everyone that the next breakthrough could start in a garage, a university lab, or a conversation at the Boeing Center. The community stands ready to support it.
