Sparda-Bank West Turns BVB Loyalty Into Everyday Banking Cards

Sparda-Bank West launched a full black-and-yellow BVB product world on 15 August 2026, complete with limited-edition debit and credit cards, a matching banking app and a nine-month free account promo aimed squarely at Borussia Dortmund fans. The cooperative bank now calls itself the Bank of the Fans and wants everyday payments to double as loyalty statements.

The move lands just as the bank targets at least 10,000 new giro customers in 2026, with special focus on younger groups, after years of gentle declines in members and clients.

Three Cards Carry the Black-and-Yellow Statement

All three cards use Parley Ocean Plastic and carry the BVB logo. The base option is a schwarzgelbe girocard debit Mastercard that debits the account directly, supports contactless payments and Identity Check online, and costs 3 euros a month. It arrives with account opening.

The middle tier is the schwarzgelbe Mastercard Gold credit card. First edition runs to 2,500 pieces. It brings worldwide acceptance, a travel insurance package, travel assistance, 9 percent cashback in the official BVB fanshop and up to 60 euros back on the annual fee depending on spend. Fee starts at 84 euros (rising to 108 euros from 1 January 2028).

At the top sits the black Mastercard Exclusive. Only 250 pieces in the first run. Matte black surface, glossy BVB crest, expanded insurance, concierge and ticket service, Priority Pass airport lounges worldwide, the same 9 percent fanshop cashback, and a 235-euro annual fee. Cards go out in order of application while stocks last.

Card Type First-run limit Annual fee Standout perks

Mastercard Gold Credit 2,500 84 € (108 € from 2028) 9 % fanshop cashback, travel insurance, up to 60 € fee rebate

The App and Account Match the Cards

Digital banking gets the same treatment. Online banking and the app appear in BVB look so fans check balances or transfer money inside a yellow-black interface. The SpardaGiro account itself carries a launch promo: new customers who open between 15 August and 30 November 2026 receive a 63-euro credit covering nine months of fees. Standard account fee is 4 euros a month and can fall to zero with conditions such as 1,000-euro monthly inflow, data consent and use of partner products.

Cashback on fanshop purchases applies only to the two credit cards under separate terms. The whole package sits at the official black-and-yellow product world details hub.

  • 9 months free on SpardaGiro for qualifying new accounts opened by 30 November 2026
  • 9 percent cashback at the BVB fanshop on Gold and Exclusive cards
  • Parley Ocean Plastic construction across the card range
  • Exclusive fan experiences and prize draws tied to the partnership

A Cooperative Bank That Needs Younger Faces

Sparda-Bank West is a member-owned cooperative headquartered in Düsseldorf with a second hub in Münster. Its footprint covers most of North Rhine-Westphalia and reaches the East Frisian islands. End-2025 figures show 505,986 members (down 1.4 percent) and 621,513 customers (down 1.0 percent). Deposits rose 7.7 percent to 12.5 billion euros. Balance-sheet total climbed 7.0 percent to 13.9 billion euros. Net interest income jumped 18.5 percent to 188.2 million euros. The bank posted a 15.2 million euro surplus and proposed a 4.0 percent dividend on cooperative shares.

Key 2025 snapshot

  • 505,986 members at year-end
  • 621,513 customers
  • 12.5 billion € customer deposits
  • 13.9 billion € total assets

CEO Andreas Lösing has been open about the need for a turnaround in membership and client numbers. In the bank’s own preliminary 2025 results and growth targets he flagged the coming black-and-yellow account, card and product world as a way to reach more people, especially younger ones. The 2026 plan calls for at least 10,000 new giro customers plus roughly one billion euros in new mortgage business.

Partnership That Came Back After Five Years

Sparda-Bank West first sponsored BVB from 2006 to 2019. After a five-year gap it returned in June 2024 as Champion Partner and exclusive banking partner for a minimum five-year term. SPORTFIVE brokered the deal. BVB managing director Carsten Cramer called Sparda a reliable fit. Lösing stressed shared values of community and cohesion.

As a cooperative bank, community, solidarity and jointly achieving big goals sit at the centre for us, values we also find in football and especially at BVB.

Andreas Lösing said that at the 2024 Champion Partner return announcement.

Since then the bank has run visible fan activations: a giant fan-photo poster on the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK north stand, free Fan-O-Mat machines that dispensed prizes instead of cash, Fan-Bulli trips to away games, and rickshaw shuttles on match days. The Instagram channel @spardaschwarzgelb pushes tickets, giveaways and the mockumentary series “Bänker am Ball”. Those earlier touchpoints built the goodwill the new cards now try to convert into permanent accounts.

How a Fan Gets the Cards

Existing Sparda customers log into the black-and-yellow online banking, pick the desired card and order. New customers open a SpardaGiro first, complete identification via the SecureApp, then select cards. Credit cards ship after account approval and need activation in the app or by letter. First-run Gold and Exclusive pieces are allocated in application order until the 2,500 and 250 caps are reached.

  1. Open or log into a SpardaGiro account on the dedicated banking portal
  2. Choose the girocard (included) and/or a credit card tier
  3. Activate the physical card once it arrives
  4. Pay contactless, online or worldwide in black and yellow

The limited runs create scarcity that pure design alone cannot. Fans who want the Exclusive matte black version face a genuine first-come queue of just 250 pieces.

What the Numbers Suggest About the Bet

The bank already spends heavily on the partnership through tickets, experiences and content. Adding tangible cards and a themed digital front end turns that spend into a direct acquisition funnel. Younger fans who open an account for the design and cashback may stay for mortgages, savings and the 4 percent cooperative dividend once they become members. The nine-month free window and fee-reduction levers lower the barrier exactly when first-edition cards create urgency.

Whether 10,000 new giro customers materialise will show in the 2026 numbers. Early signals will be how fast the 2,500 Gold and 250 Exclusive cards sell out and how many of those holders also become cooperative members. For now the product world is live, the promo is running, and every payment a fan makes with the new plastic becomes free advertising for both club and bank.

The bakery counter, the fanshop till and the stadium gates all accept the same statement now: black and yellow, charged to a Sparda account.
