Border 2 Not Impacted by Copyright Dispute Over Original Film

In a recent clarification, producer Nidhi Dutta confirmed that the upcoming film “Border 2” will not be affected by the ongoing legal dispute surrounding its predecessor, the 1997 war film “Border.” Despite the public notice issued by film distributor Bharat Shah, which claimed rights over the original film, Dutta assured fans that the sequel’s production and release remain on track. This announcement has brought relief to fans eagerly awaiting the continuation of the iconic war drama, which stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, and Diljit Dosanjh.

Clarification from the Producers

The legal dispute over the original “Border” film has been a topic of concern for many fans. Bharat Shah, who financed the 1997 film, issued a public notice claiming to be the World Rights Controller of all copyrights for “Border.” The notice warned any parties entering into agreements with filmmaker JP Dutta to be aware of the ongoing legal proceedings. However, Nidhi Dutta, producer and writer of “Border 2,” has clarified that this dispute will not impact the sequel.

Dutta explained that the High Court has dismissed the case, and as per the settlement, Bharat Shah is required to pay the overflow, which he has not done for 27 years. She emphasized that Shah has no rights over anything related to “Border” until he fulfills his commitment. This clarification has put to rest any concerns about the future of “Border 2,” allowing the production to proceed without legal hindrances.

The producers’ statement has reassured fans and stakeholders that the sequel will continue as planned. The involvement of key cast members, including Sunny Deol and Varun Dhawan, along with the direction of Anurag Singh, known for his work on “Kesari” and “Punjab 1984,” adds to the anticipation surrounding the film.

Details of the Legal Dispute

The legal dispute dates back to an agreement made on November 21, 1994, between Bharat Shah and JP Dutta to finance the original “Border” film. According to the agreement, the revenue generated by the film was to be split equally between Shah and Dutta. Additionally, Dutta was required to keep Shah informed about the film’s financial performance. Shah claims that Dutta failed to update him on the financials or pay his share of the profits.

Despite these allegations, the High Court has dismissed the case, and the producers of “Border 2” have made it clear that the sequel will not be impacted. The public notice issued by Shah has been described as a sub judiciary matter, with no bearing on the production of the new film. This resolution allows the filmmakers to focus on delivering a compelling continuation of the “Border” saga.

The legal conflict has highlighted the complexities of copyright and financial agreements in the film industry. However, the producers’ proactive approach in addressing the issue has ensured that “Border 2” can move forward without any legal obstacles. This clarity is crucial for maintaining the momentum and excitement surrounding the film’s release.
