The Oklahoma State Cowgirls beat the Texas Tech Lady Raiders 60-50 in a Big 12 basketball game on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock. The Cowgirls improved their record to 16-8 overall and 8-4 in the conference, while the Lady Raiders fell to 9-15 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
The star of the game was Oklahoma State center Hannah Gusters, who scored a game-high 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. She also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Gusters dominated the paint and gave the Cowgirls a decisive edge in the post.
Gusters was supported by guard Stailee Heard, who added nine points, six rebounds, and four assists. Guard Anna Gret Asi also contributed four points, five rebounds, and six assists. The Cowgirls shot 46% from the field, 23% from the three-point line, and 62% from the free-throw line.
Jasmine Shavers Tops Lady Raiders with 16 Points
The Lady Raiders were led by guard Jasmine Shavers, who scored 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field. She also had four rebounds and two steals. Shavers was the only Lady Raider to score in double figures, as the rest of the team struggled to find their rhythm.
Guard Kilah Freelon was the second-highest scorer for the Lady Raiders with 13 points, but she shot only 4-of-14 from the field and 1-of-7 from the three-point line. Guard Bailey Maupin had a quiet night with only two points on 1-of-6 shooting from the field. The Lady Raiders shot 30% from the field, 14% from the three-point line, and 87% from the free-throw line.
Cowgirls Pull Away in the Second Quarter
The game was close in the first quarter, as the Cowgirls led by only four points, 17-13. However, the Cowgirls broke away in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Raiders 18-8 and taking a 14-point lead at halftime, 35-21. The Cowgirls maintained their double-digit lead for most of the second half, as the Lady Raiders could not mount a comeback.
The Cowgirls were able to control the tempo and the boards, as they had 13 assists and 32 rebounds, compared to the Lady Raiders’ six assists and 30 rebounds. The Cowgirls also had six steals and zero blocks, while the Lady Raiders had three steals and zero blocks. The Cowgirls had 11 turnovers, while the Lady Raiders had seven turnovers.
Cowgirls Move Up to Third Place in Big 12 Standings
The win moved the Cowgirls up to third place in the Big 12 standings, behind No. 8 Kansas State and No. 10 Baylor. The Cowgirls have won four of their last five games, and are looking to secure a high seed in the upcoming Big 12 tournament. The Cowgirls will face No. 10 Baylor on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.
The loss kept the Lady Raiders at the bottom of the Big 12 standings, tied with Kansas for the last place. The Lady Raiders have lost six of their last seven games, and are looking to end their season on a positive note. The Lady Raiders will face TCU on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024, at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth.
