The Mt Hope High School winter sports scene delivered a weekend of mixed emotions for local fans with the girls basketball team struggling in a tough matchup, the boys hockey team falling in a dramatic shootout and the wrestling squad dominating a quad meet in Quincy, Massachusetts. Passionate play and close contests defined the Husky performances as winter sports heat up in Rhode Island and beyond.

Girls Basketball Fight Too Short in Tough St Raphael Game

The Mt Hope High School girls basketball team fell short in a hard-fought home contest against Division I rival St Raphael Academy on Friday January 30. The Saints secured a 41 to 29 victory over the Huskies, leaving Mt Hope with a 5 and 7 overall record while St Raphael improved to 10 and 5 on the season.

The game remained close through three quarters with St Raphael leading 24 to 19 at halftime. The Saints broke the contest open late, outscoring the Huskies 11 to 3 in the fourth quarter.

Lilly DaSilveira led the Huskies with 13 points. Hailey Ferreira finished with seven and Aubrey Cummings scored four in the loss.

On offense the Huskies struggled to create consistent scoring runs despite strong defensive efforts. St Raphael’s balance on both ends of the court helped them maintain control down the stretch. With league play still underway Mt Hope looks to rebound as the season approaches critical mid February divisional matchups.

Dominant Wrestling Leads Husky Athletes to Quad Sweep

In contrast to the basketball defeat, the Mt Hope wrestling team delivered a standout performance at a weekend quad meet held Saturday January 31 in Quincy Massachusetts. Facing Quincy High School, Josiah Quincy and Plymouth North the Huskies swept the competition, showcasing depth and strength across weight classes.

Mt Hope had undefeated performances from key wrestlers including Henry McGovern, Arion Ferris, Bryce Brown, Eli Francis, Anthony Lombardi, Matthew Thibaudeau, Kenny Andreozzi and Will Corrente.

The quartet style meet tested the Huskies against varied opponents from the Massachusetts high school circuit, which is governed by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, a major scholastic athletic body in the state.

Strong individual efforts and relentless pressure throughout each match highlighted the Mt Hope grapplers’ commitment. These results not only boosted team confidence but also signaled that the squad could be a contender in postseason qualification later this winter.

Boys Hockey Heartbreaker In Shootout Loss

Meanwhile the East Bay Hurricanes boys hockey team, a co op that includes Mt Hope players, had a tense Division II matchup at West Warwick’s Magiera Rink. Facing the Coventry Johnston co op, East Bay battled to a 3 to 3 tie in regulation before falling 2 to 1 in the shootout.

Coventry Johnston took command early with two goals in the first period. East Bay answered with an 11th goal of the season from Evan Agren, assisted by Colton Kerrison and Mt Hope’s Jackson Stringer. However Coventry Johnston scored again to make it 3 to 1 before East Bay rallied.

Nathan Carpenter sparked the comeback with a goal late in the third period tying the game at 3. Brayden Swanycamp and Colton Kerrison earned assists on the tying goal. Despite the dramatic finish, East Bay could not convert enough chances in the shootout with Coventry Johnston prevailing 2 to 1.

Goalie Lucas Nicoletti made 27 saves in regulation for East Bay, showcasing strong netminding between the pipes. The shootout loss, though disappointing, highlighted how competitive and evenly matched Division II hockey has become in the region.
