Google Play Puts XR Headsets on the Same Shelf as Watches
Play Store now files XR headsets with watches and TVs, auto-listing millions of phone apps beside a little over 100 XR titles.
Google Play now shows an XR headset chip on app pages, in the same device row that already lists phones, watches, tablets, TVs, Chromebooks, and cars. Tap it and the listing swaps in headset screenshots, reviews, and other XR-only details. A matching XR Headset slot sits under Other Devices in the Apps and Games tabs.
That is the same storefront move Google used in 2022 for watches, TVs, and cars. On Samsung’s Galaxy XR, it turns the phone in your pocket into the catalog for a headset that is awkward to shop on, and it does it whether the app was built for XR or not.
XR Headsets Now Sit Beside Watches and TVs
Open an app on a phone and the chips sit under the install button. They used to stop at watches, tablets, TVs, Chromebooks, cars, and phones. The new chip is XR headsets. On the Apps and Games tabs, Other Devices now carries an XR Headset section that groups titles made for the headset and other software that may appeal to owners.
THE FORM FACTOR ROW
- The chip: An XR headset tile joins the existing device carousel on an app’s detail page.
- The tap: It loads screenshots, reviews, and copy aimed at headset users instead of the phone set.
- The shelf: Other Devices in Apps and Games now includes an XR Headset row, alongside Watch, TV, and the rest.
The phone remains the hub. You can still browse on a small screen, pick a target device, and send an install, the pattern Google already uses for watches and TVs. Headset owners can also open Play on the device itself and download straight to it, which Android’s distribution guide now treats as a normal path.
The chips do a second job. Anyone who opens Play on a phone, even with no headset signed in, now sees XR as a peer of Wear OS and Android TV. That is advertising as much as navigation.
The Same Other Devices Tab From 2022
Google did not invent a new store for XR. It extended the tab it added when Android had to sell watches, TVs, and cars from a phone.
HOW PLAY LEARNED TO SELL OTHER DEVICES
- September 2022: Play adds an Other Devices tab in Apps and Games for Watch, TV, and Car, with device filters in search and remote install from the phone, as Pixel Watch approached.
- December 12, 2024: Google opens the Android XR SDK developer preview and says most existing Play apps will be available on XR with no extra work.
- October 21, 2025: Samsung puts Galaxy XR on sale in the United States at $1,799, the first headset on Android XR, with Korea following on October 22, 2025.
- November 2025: Play adds the XR headset chip and the Other Devices XR Headset section.
- April 7, 2026: Juston Payne, senior director of product for Android XR, says the dedicated immersive library has grown to over 100 apps, more than doubling since launch, on top of millions of ordinary Play titles.
Wear OS, Android TV, and Automotive already had their own screenshot slots, quality bars, and sometimes their own release tracks. XR now has the same paperwork. The chip is the public face of a listing type, not a one-off banner for one Samsung SKU.
Google’s public Android XR on headsets and glasses page still frames Galaxy XR as the device you can buy now, with other hardware due later in 2026, including the first audio glasses collections and a reservation path for XREAL’s AURA. Those products inherit the same store once they run the same OS.
Millions of Phone Apps, a Little Over 100 Built for XR
Play is running two catalogs under one icon, and the chip is how you tell them apart.
Existing apps on the mobile release track are automatically discoverable on Google Play for Android XR users, as long as they do not declare features the headset cannot satisfy, such as telephony. Matthew McCullough, vice president of product management for Android developer, put it this way when Galaxy XR shipped: in most cases a mobile app runs on Android XR with little or no extra development through Google Play. Large-screen work already done for tablets and foldables carries over, because the headset shows those apps on a spatial panel.
The other catalog is smaller and has to be built on purpose. Differentiated XR apps add spatial panels, 3D models, or spatial environments, or they are native OpenXR and Unity titles. Those can stay on the mobile track if the same package still makes sense on a phone, or they can go to a dedicated Android XR track that only XR devices see.
THE TWO PLAY CATALOGS ON XR
- Millions of apps: Phone and tablet titles on the mobile track, listed on Galaxy XR unless they need hardware Play will hide.
- Over 100 apps: Titles Google counted on April 7, 2026 as made to take full advantage of XR, more than double the launch set.
- The chip’s job: Surface headset screenshots and reviews for the second group, and keep the first group from looking like a broken phone port.
Early Galaxy XR owners kept circling the same split. The Play catalog was the reason to put the headset on, because Netflix, YouTube, and the rest of a normal Android library showed up as windows in the room. The native game list was the reason to keep a Quest around. Meta’s own apps are not in Play, so that hole is structural, not a missing port.
What Developers Must Upload for an XR Listing
The chip only has something useful to show if someone uploaded headset assets. Play Console now treats Android XR headsets as a device type next to phones, 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, Chromebooks, Android TV, Wear OS, and Automotive.
PLAY SCREENSHOT RULES BY DEVICE
| Device type | How many | Shape | Where they show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone | 2 to 8 | Between 16:9 and 9:16 | Default listing |
| Wear OS | At least 1 | 1:1, 384 x 384 px minimum | Watch listing only, no device frames |
| Android TV | At least 1, plus a TV banner | TV-specific | TV devices only |
| Android XR | 4 to 8 | 8:5, 3840 x 2400 px recommended, 1920 x 1200 px minimum | Headset listing and the XR chip |
Play Console Help says you must upload 4 to 8 XR screenshots to showcase an app on that surface. Files are PNG or JPEG, up to 8 MB each. No other Play device type uses 8:5, which is why a phone capture will not pass.
Two Play Release Tracks
Spatial features can ride inside the existing Android App Bundle on the mobile track, and XR users get that same artifact. If the headset build needs different permissions or a different feature set, the dedicated Android XR track takes a second APK under the same package name. That APK must declare android.software.xr.api.spatial for Jetpack XR or android.software.xr.api.openxr for OpenXR and Unity, and Play then shows it only on devices that support the matching feature.
Marking optional hardware such as hand tracking as required will hide the app from headsets that lack it. Jan Kleinert, a developer relations engineer, told teams to check those features at runtime with hasSystemFeature() instead of gating the whole listing.
Screenshots, Spatial Video, and 30 GB Packs
Headset listings can carry extra video that phones never see. A spatial preview must be a 180-degree, 360-degree, or stereoscopic clip on YouTube, public or unlisted, with ads off and no age gate. Play on the headset plays it as a 3D preview. A separate non-spatial XR video can replace the ordinary preview on headsets and on the XR slice of the mobile listing.
Heavy titles get a bigger pipe. Kleinert’s publishing note says Android XR apps may ship 30 GB of extra asset packs through Play Asset Delivery, against a 4 GB cumulative cap on ordinary on-demand and fast-follow packs. Quality rules on top of that set 48dp as the minimum size for interactive targets and 56dp as the recommended size, because eyes and hands are the pointers.
Steam Frame Runs Android Games Without Google Play
The wire copy around the chips often treated Valve’s Steam Frame as another shopper for this shelf. It is not. Frame is a SteamOS headset. Android games reach it as APKs in a Steam depot, launched through Lepton, Valve’s Android container, which is built for games and turns off Android services it does not need.
WHERE ANDROID GAMES ACTUALLY INSTALL
| Headset | System | How Android software arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy XR | Android XR | Google Play, including the XR chip and Other Devices row |
| Steam Frame | SteamOS | Android depot on Steam, run through Lepton; not the Play Store |
Frame launched on September 14, 2026, at $1,059 for 256GB and $1,299 for 1TB. Valve welcomes the same APKs developers already ship for phones and for Meta Quest, but Google Play licensing, Play Games, and Play services are not part of that path. The Play chip does nothing for a Frame owner.
The people who actually use the chip are on Android XR: Galaxy XR today, then later headsets and wired glasses that Google documents as Play devices. XREAL’s AURA is already on the reserve list on Google’s XR page. Audio glasses are a different distribution problem, because Google has said augmented experiences for audio and display glasses follow a separate development path from immersive headset apps.
Why the Dedicated XR Shelf Still Looks Empty
A year after Galaxy XR went on sale, the auto-listed catalog is still the pitch, and the made-for-XR shelf is still the part that looks unfinished. Payne’s April 7, 2026 product post is the last hard count Google has put on the second group.
Beyond the millions of apps available from Google Play on XR, there are now over 100 apps made to take full advantage of XR’s immersiveness
Juston Payne, Senior Director of Product, Android XR, Google product blog, April 7, 2026
He said that library had more than doubled since Galaxy XR launched. The same post named over 100 apps built for XR, including Real VR Fishing, the then-upcoming Trombone Champ: Unflattened, and a Paris Saint-Germain Immersion app that can put a live match in the room or on a tabletop. Auto-spatialization, pinned wall apps, and session restore shipped in that same update, which is how Google is trying to make the millions of 2D titles feel less like phone windows floating in a headset.
WHAT GOOGLE PUT ON THE XR SHELF IN APRIL 2026
- Real VR Fishing: Called out as a new immersive addition on Play.
- Trombone Champ: Unflattened: Named as an upcoming XR cut of the brass-rhythm game.
- PSG Immersion: Live matches in full immersive mode or as an overhead tabletop view of Parc des Princes.
Engine work since then has widened the on-ramp. In May 2026 Google added official Unreal Engine and Godot paths beside Unity, plus an Android XR Engine Hub for Windows. That helps studios port. It does not fill Other Devices by itself. The chip and the dedicated row only look busy when those ports ship 8:5 screenshots and, for the heavy ones, a spatial trailer.
Until more of that lands, Play will keep doing what it did for watches and TVs: sell a new form factor with the apps people already have, and keep a smaller aisle for the software that actually uses the hardware. The aisle is labelled now. It is still short.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do existing Android phone apps work on Galaxy XR without changes?
Most titles on the mobile track are listed on Android XR as long as they do not require unsupported features such as telephony. A large-screen app that already behaves on tablets runs full screen on a spatial panel at 1024dp by 720dp, with eyes and hands as the basic pointers, and it is not letterboxed in compatibility mode.
What screenshot size does Google Play want for Android XR?
Headset showcase shots use an 8:5 frame at 3840 by 2400 pixels recommended and 1920 by 1200 pixels minimum. Listings can also add a spatial YouTube preview in 180-degree, 360-degree, or stereoscopic form that plays only on XR headsets, and a non-spatial XR video that replaces the ordinary preview on those devices.
What is the Android XR dedicated release track?
It is a second Play track under the same package name, used when the headset build cannot share one artifact with the phone app. The APK must declare android.software.xr.api.spatial or android.software.xr.api.openxr, and Play then hides it from phones and from XR devices that lack that feature.
Does Valve’s Steam Frame use the Google Play Store?
No. Steam Frame is a SteamOS headset. Developers upload an APK to an Android depot on Steam, and Lepton runs it in a game-focused container. Valve has not promised Play Store, Play services, or Play licensing on that path, so the XR chip in Google Play does not apply.
