Yuhn and Shanahan earn Hockey East honors for Boston University. The sophomore forward Clara Yuhn and the junior goalie Callie Shanahan of the Boston University women’s ice hockey team were recognized by Hockey East for their outstanding performances over the weekend. Yuhn was named the Hockey East Player of the Week and Shanahan was selected as the Stop It Goaltending Co-Goaltender of the Week, as announced by Hockey East on Monday.
Yuhn scored two goals, including the game-winner, in a 4-0 road win at Merrimack on Saturday, after collecting two assists in a 4-1 triumph at Vermont on Friday. The sophomore now has nine goals on the year to surpass her freshman total of eight and is tied for second on the team with 22 points.
Shanahan stopped 44 of 45 shots over the weekend and earned her second shutout of February when she saved all 19 shots she faced in the win at Merrimack. With her performances, she raised her save percentage to .923 and lowered her goals-against average to 1.92.
The Terriers improved their record to 15-7-2 and secured a home playoff spot
The Terriers improved their record to 15-7-2 and secured a home playoff spot with their two road wins over the weekend. They are currently in third place in the Hockey East standings, behind Northeastern and UConn, with two games left in the regular season.
The Terriers have been playing well in February, winning five of their six games and outscoring their opponents 24-8. They have also been getting contributions from different players, as 11 different Terriers have scored at least one goal this month.
The Terriers will close out the regular season with a home-and-home series against No. 11 UConn starting on Friday (Feb. 23) at Walter Brown Arena. The Huskies are the only team that the Terriers have not beaten this season, as they lost both of their previous meetings in January.
The Terriers are aiming for their first Hockey East title since 2015
The Terriers are aiming for their first Hockey East title since 2015, when they defeated Boston College in the championship game. They have reached the Hockey East final four times since then, but have fallen short each time.
The Terriers have a talented and balanced roster, led by senior captain Jesse Compher, who leads the team with 25 points, and junior assistant captain Nara Elia, who leads the team with 10 goals. They also have a strong defense, anchored by senior Abby Cook, who has 18 points and a plus-17 rating, and a solid goaltending duo of Shanahan and sophomore Kate Stuart, who have combined for a .921 save percentage and a 1.97 goals-against average.
The Terriers are confident that they can compete with any team in the league, and that they have what it takes to win the Hockey East title and advance to the NCAA tournament.
