Barkov’s Left Leg Scare Reopens Florida’s Lost Season
Aleksander Barkov left Florida’s 4-3 OT loss in San Jose on his left leg, reopening the same hole that produced a 40-38-4 missed playoff year.
Aleksander Barkov left Florida’s 4-3 overtime loss in San Jose on Thursday after his left leg buckled in a corner, and he did not return. It was the 31-year-old captain’s second game back from a full season lost to his right knee.
Paul Maurice, the Panthers’ coach, said the new problem is not last year’s injury. Florida expected a clearer picture Friday afternoon, still on a trip that visits Anaheim on Sunday and Los Angeles on Tuesday. Last season already showed what this roster looks like without him. It finished 40-38-4 and missed the playoffs.
Barkov Went Straight Down the Tunnel
The play was not a open-ice hit. Barkov was in a board fight with San Jose defenseman Darnell Nurse and forward Zack Ostapchuk during a Florida power play in the second period at SAP Center when his left leg bent under him. He got up, went straight for the tunnel, and threw his gloves in frustration on the way. He walked under his own power with a limp. He stayed there through the third period and overtime.
The man advantage itself had already gone wrong. A high-stick cut Barkov and left him bleeding, which gave Florida four minutes. Will Smith scored shorthanded at 5:52 to make it 2-0. Then Barkov went down. Smith scored again at 10:37 for 3-0. Mason Marchment had opened at 14:20 of the first. Akira Schmid, in his first start of 2026-27, had made 10 saves in that opening period.
It’s not related to his injury last year at all. He’ll get looked at. We’ll have a good idea by tomorrow afternoon.
Paul Maurice, Panthers coach, postgame in San Jose
Eetu Luostarinen got Florida on the board at 17:10 of the second, then tipped Dmitry Kulikov’s shot at 5:01 of the third. Matthew Tkachuk tied it from the slot 17 seconds later. The Panthers killed off a San Jose power play that spilled into overtime, then Luca Cagnoni scored at 3:14 of the extra session for his first NHL goal. Seth Jones led Florida at 27:43. Anton Lundell won 68.8% of his faceoffs. The Panthers clawed back from a 3-0 deficit and left with one point.
Luostarinen, who scored twice, said you never want to see your teammate go down, especially your captain, and that guys need to step up for him. Tkachuk called it a gritty point in a gritty game. Maurice said he thought they could come back and win it, and that he would rather lose it the way they did than lose it on the overtime kill.
The 40-38-4 Season Without Their Captain
The scare is not only that a star left a Thursday night game. Florida already ran the full version of life without Barkov, and the result is on the books. He tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee on the first day of training camp last September, had surgery the next day, and missed every regular-season game. The Panthers, coming off Cups in 2024 and 2025, went 40-38-4 for 84 points, scored 246 goals, allowed 274, finished seventh in the Atlantic and 14th in the East, and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018-19.
That made them the first defending champion left out since the 2014-15 Los Angeles Kings, and the first two-time defending champion left out since the 1969-70 Montreal Canadiens. Barkov later said he would have been ready for the playoffs if Florida had qualified. They did not. The 2026-27 season was built as the reset, with Barkov back in the middle and new pieces around him. Thursday was game 2 of that bet.
BARKOV AND FLORIDA BY SEASON
| Season | Barkov GP | Barkov points | What Florida did |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023-24 | 73 | 80 | Stanley Cup, Selke Trophy |
| 2024-25 | 67 | 71 | Stanley Cup, Selke Trophy |
| 2025-26 | 0 | 0 | 40-38-4, missed playoffs |
| 2026-27 | 2 | 0 | 1-0-1 after two games |
The 2024-25 line was 20 goals and 51 assists in 67 games, then 6 goals and 16 assists in 23 playoff games. He won the Selke Trophy for a third time that spring, after 2020-21 and 2023-24, plus the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. Take that player out for 82 games and the same core still could not keep Florida in the East. That is the data set Thursday put back on the table, not a hypothetical.
A Full Year to Repair the Right Knee
Barkov is 6-foot-3, 214 pounds, from Tampere, Finland, taken second overall in 2013, in his 13th NHL season and his eighth as captain. He carries an eight-year, $80 million contract with a $10 million cap hit through 2029-30, year 5 of 8. Hockey-Reference lists him at 782 points in 806 games, with 286 goals and 496 assists, plus 25 goals and 56 assists in 94 playoff games. He is pointless in two games this season.
THE YEAR HE SPENT GETTING BACK
- September 2025: Tears the ACL and MCL in his right knee on the first day of camp and has surgery the next day.
- January 2026: Starts skating again and later practices with the Panthers before the season ends.
- May 2026: Captains Finland at the IIHF World Championship in Switzerland, posts 11 points in 10 games (3 goals, 8 assists), and wins gold.
- September 9, 2026: Tells the NHL/NHLPA media tour he is excited about the new season and that his right knee is not on his mind.
- September 29, 2026: Plays 20:32 in a 1-0 overtime win at Carolina, winning 11 of 20 faceoffs, with no points.
- October 1, 2026: Leaves in the second period at San Jose with his left leg and does not return.
At the worlds, Barkov said the main worry was whether he could play free and not think too much, and that once the first game started he was not thinking about the knee at all. He said the more Finland played, the better he felt. Brady Tkachuk, acquired from Ottawa on June 21 for two 2026 first-round picks, a 2029 first, and a 2027 second, said even in practice Barkov is one of the top three players in the world. Jacob Markstrom arrived June 30 from New Jersey after Sergei Bobrovsky left for Toronto. The additions were made to play with Barkov, not to replace him for months.
The Centers Who Have to Cover for Him
If Friday’s exam keeps Barkov out, the middle does not get a mystery import. It gets the same names who already tried this job last season, plus a 37-year-old on an opening-night fourth line. The projected lineup in San Jose had Brady Tkachuk with Barkov and Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe with Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk, Luostarinen with Lundell and Sandis Vilmanis, and Bokondji Imama with Lars Eller and Garnet Hathaway.
THE MIDDLE IF BARKOV SITS
- Sam Bennett: The second-line center, a Conn Smythe winner with two Cups, logged a point in the 4-3 loss and would slide up if the top job opens.
- Anton Lundell: The third-line center won 68.8% of his draws Thursday and has 201 points in 360 career games on a $5 million cap hit.
- Eetu Luostarinen: He scored twice in the comeback and said the room needs people to step up, which is now a lineup problem, not a quote.
- Lars Eller: The opening-night fourth-line center, listed at 37, is the next pivot on a 12-forward roster that already has Brad Marchand on injured reserve.
Lundell has long been described as a Barkov-lite two-way center. Last season was supposed to be his chance to prove he could drive a top line. Florida still missed the playoffs. Bennett can win a playoff series in a wrecking-ball way. He is not a three-time Selke winner who starts 20:07 a night and takes the hardest matchups. Luostarinen’s two goals bought a point. They do not replace 200-foot minutes through an 84-game season.
Ten of the First 13 Games Are on the Road
The Panthers opened at Carolina on September 29, played in San Jose on October 1, and still owe visits to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, October 4, at 8 p.m. ET at Honda Center and the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, October 6. The home opener is October 10 against Minnesota. Ten of their first 13 games are away from Amerant Bank Arena. They are already 1-0-1 with 3 points, first in a very young Atlantic table that will not stay that way.
FLORIDA’S EARLY HOLES
- The record: 1-0-1 after a 1-0 overtime win at Carolina and a 4-3 overtime loss at San Jose.
- The trip: Four games on the road to start, with two California dates still unpaid.
- The defense: Gustav Forsling, who scored the opener in overtime, was a late scratch with an upper-body injury and is day to day.
- The extras: Brad Marchand is on injured reserve and Jonah Gadjovich is injured non-roster, so the 12-forward list is already short.
Forsling’s absence on Thursday meant Seth Jones skated 27:43 and Radko Gudas had to eat the heavy side. A Barkov scratch on Sunday would stack a missing 1C on a missing top-pair defenseman on a missing Marchand, in a building they will not see again until they fly back across the country. Florida led 41-24 in hits in San Jose. That is a style they can play without their captain for a night. It is also how you get people hurt on a long trip.
What Friday’s MRI Still Has to Settle
Maurice would not name the injury Thursday night. He only separated it from the right knee that cost Barkov the 2025-26 season. Insider Pierre LeBrun said Barkov was set for an MRI on Friday. No public result had been released Friday morning. Family doctor Harjas Grewal, who reviews NHL injury video, wrote that the replay showed inward stress to Barkov’s knee.
Most likely this would result in a torn MCL (time off depends on grade, often grade 2 and 4-6 weeks out). Torn ACL +/- meniscus is also possible.
Dr. Harjas Grewal, family doctor, on X
Grewal later added that Barkov is at higher risk for an ACL tear because he already tore the other side, and that this is the main fear in full context. A four-to-six-week MCL is the optimistic read of that clip, not the default. Florida spent a year learning what a lost season at center looks like. The louder problem is a second ACL, this time on the left leg, after the right one already stole 82 games.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The leg: It is the left side, not a repeat of last year’s right ACL and MCL, per Maurice.
- The night: Barkov left in the second period, threw his gloves, and did not play in the third or in overtime.
- The calendar: Florida was due to know more Friday afternoon, then play Anaheim on Sunday.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The structure: MCL, ACL, meniscus, ankle, or a bruise that looks worse than it is.
- The time: Days, the four-to-six-week MCL window Grewal flagged, or another lost season.
- Sunday: Whether Barkov, or Forsling, is in the lineup at Honda Center.
The Ducks game is October 4 in Anaheim. The Kings game is October 6. Those two dates will tell whether Thursday was a limp off the ice or the start of another year in which Florida’s middle is a committee. Last season already ran that committee for 82 games. It ended at 84 points, outside the playoffs, with the captain watching.
