SFA Suspends Two F&B Businesses After Mass Food Poisoning at ByteDance Office

In a significant move, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has suspended the operations of two food and beverage businesses following a mass food poisoning incident at ByteDance’s office. The incident, which affected 130 individuals, has prompted a thorough investigation by the SFA and the Ministry of Health (MOH). The affected businesses, Yun Hai Yao and Pu Tien Services, have been ordered to cease operations until further notice, as authorities work to ensure food safety and hygiene standards are met.

The food poisoning incident at ByteDance’s office has led to swift action from the SFA and MOH. A total of 130 individuals reported symptoms of gastroenteritis after consuming food supplied by Yun Hai Yao and Pu Tien Services. Among them, 17 were hospitalized but are currently in stable condition. The remaining individuals sought outpatient treatment, self-medicated, or recovered without medical intervention.

In response to the severity of the incident, the SFA has mandated that both Yun Hai Yao and Pu Tien Services clean and sanitize their premises thoroughly. This includes all equipment and utensils used in food preparation. Additionally, all ready-to-eat and perishable food items must be disposed of to prevent further contamination. The SFA has emphasized the importance of adhering to strict food safety protocols to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Measures for Food Handlers and Hygiene Officers

To ensure that such an incident does not recur, the SFA has implemented stringent measures for food handlers and hygiene officers working at the affected premises. All food handlers are required to re-attend and pass the Food Safety Course Level 1. They must also test negative for foodborne pathogens before resuming their duties. This step is crucial in ensuring that the individuals handling food are knowledgeable about safety practices and are not carriers of harmful pathogens.

Furthermore, the appointed Food Hygiene Officer at each premise must re-attend and pass the Food Safety Course Level 3. This advanced course is designed to equip hygiene officers with the necessary skills to oversee food safety practices effectively. The SFA’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to maintaining high standards of food safety and protecting public health.

Public Advisory and Future Actions

In light of the incident, the SFA has issued a public advisory urging consumers to be vigilant about food hygiene practices. The agency has advised the public to avoid patronizing food establishments that do not adhere to proper hygiene standards. Additionally, the SFA has encouraged individuals to report any poor hygiene practices they observe in food establishments via its online feedback form. This collaborative effort between the public and the authorities is essential in maintaining food safety across the country.
