Avatr to Debut Kunlun Range Extender Tech with New SUV in Q4 2024

Avatr, the electric vehicle (EV) brand backed by Changan Automobile, CATL, and Huawei, is set to debut its innovative Kunlun range extender technology with the launch of the Avatr 07 SUV in the fourth quarter of 2024. This new technology aims to address the common shortcomings of traditional range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs), such as power loss and noise issues. The Avatr 07, along with other upcoming models, will feature both pure electric and range-extended powertrain options, marking a significant step in Avatr’s ambitious plans to expand its EV portfolio.

The Kunlun range extender technology represents a major advancement in the EV industry. Developed in collaboration with Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the Kunlun system features a 39-kilowatt-hour Shenxing battery that maintains a peak discharge rate of 7.7C even at low battery levels, compared to 9C when fully charged. This ensures that the vehicle can perform efficiently even when the battery is low, addressing a common issue with traditional REEVs.

The Avatr 07’s range-extended model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds, demonstrating the system’s impressive performance capabilities. Additionally, the Kunlun system includes a HE 1.5T turbocharged engine with electronic oil pump technology and active piston control, which reduces cabin noise to just 35.7 decibels during idle charging. This combination of power and quiet operation sets a new standard for range-extended EVs.

The Kunlun technology also boasts high thermal efficiency, with the engine achieving a thermal efficiency of 44.39% and generating 3.63 kWh of electricity per liter of fuel. This efficiency significantly reduces fuel consumption and enhances the overall sustainability of the vehicle. The system’s ability to charge from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes further enhances its practicality and convenience for users.

Expanding the EV Portfolio

The launch of the Avatr 07 is part of Avatr’s broader strategy to expand its electric vehicle lineup. In addition to the Avatr 07, the company plans to introduce range-extended versions of the Avatr 11 and 12 models by the end of the year. These new models will cater to a growing market demand for hybrid vehicles that offer the benefits of both electric and traditional powertrains.

Avatr’s ambitious plans include the introduction of various vehicle types over the next three years, such as sedans, mid- to large-sized five-seaters, large six-seaters, sports cars, and MPVs. This diverse portfolio aims to capture a wide range of consumer preferences and establish Avatr as a leading player in the EV market. The company’s focus on innovation and advanced technology positions it well to compete in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.

The collaboration with CATL and Huawei provides Avatr with a strong technological foundation, enabling the development of cutting-edge EV solutions. By leveraging the expertise of these industry leaders, Avatr can deliver high-performance vehicles that meet the needs of modern consumers. The Kunlun range extender technology is a testament to this collaborative approach and its potential to drive future growth.

Addressing Market Challenges

The introduction of the Kunlun range extender technology comes at a time when the high-end pure EV market has been sluggish. By offering range-extended models, Avatr aims to address consumer concerns about range anxiety and the limitations of pure electric vehicles. The Kunlun system’s ability to maintain performance even at low battery levels and its efficient fuel-to-electric conversion make it an attractive option for consumers seeking reliable and versatile EVs.

The market’s positive reception of range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) is evident from the success of other Chinese automakers like Li Auto. Avatr’s entry into this segment with the Kunlun technology positions it to capitalize on this growing trend and drive sales growth. The company’s focus on addressing the shortcomings of traditional REEVs and enhancing the overall driving experience is likely to resonate with consumers.

Looking ahead, Avatr’s commitment to innovation and its strategic partnerships with industry leaders will be crucial in navigating the competitive EV market. The successful launch of the Avatr 07 and the Kunlun range extender technology will set the stage for future advancements and solidify Avatr’s position as a key player in the electric vehicle industry.
