Sarvnik Kaur to Co-Facilitate Sydney Film Festival’s Platform Lab for Emerging Creatives

Indian filmmaker Sarvnik Kaur, celebrated for her impactful documentary Against the Tide—which took home the grand jury prize at Sundance in 2023—is returning to the Sydney Film Festival (SFF). This time, she won’t just be showcasing her own work. Instead, Kaur will co-facilitate the third edition of the Platform Lab alongside UK producer Samm Haillay, marking an exciting opportunity for emerging filmmakers.

What is the Platform Lab?

The Platform Lab, a creative incubator organized by Sydney Film Festival and For Film’s Sake, serves as a unique opportunity for filmmakers to develop their projects and hone their craft. The lab focuses on skill-building for rapid content development, using principles of design thinking, and is open to both new and seasoned professionals in the film industry. This year’s program is accepting applications for up to 12 participants, who will be guided through workshops aimed at both the creative and strategic aspects of filmmaking.

The workshops, which will run for 6-8 hours per day, provide an intense environment for filmmakers to sharpen their skills. More importantly, the Platform Lab provides a collaborative atmosphere where like-minded creatives can connect, share insights, and form new partnerships. The culmination of the program is an exciting public pitch at the SFF Hub on June 14.

Kaur’s Return as Facilitator

Kaur, who has previously contributed as a guest expert at the Platform Lab, returns this year as a co-facilitator. She is especially excited to take on the role, noting that she has benefited from similar programs in the past. “The real Eureka moments come from the unique alchemy of support and serendipity that programs like Platform offer,” Kaur explained in her statement. She described how her own participation in festivals has led to fruitful collaborations, and she’s eager to help others experience similar breakthroughs.

This shift from guest to facilitator is significant for Kaur, reflecting her growing stature within the global film community. Her documentary Against the Tide not only garnered acclaim but also strengthened her commitment to bringing diverse voices and underrepresented stories to the forefront. She emphasized how festivals like SFF provide more than just a venue to showcase films—they are incubators for future collaborations.

A Unique Opportunity for Creatives

Unlike traditional development labs, which can sometimes feel isolated or detached, Platform is all about fostering real-time feedback and engagement. “Festivals are wonderful places for screening films, but even better backdrops for meeting your future collaborators,” Kaur said. The environment created by Platform allows creatives to push boundaries, rethink their approaches, and take bold steps in their careers.

The program isn’t just designed for emerging filmmakers—it’s a space where experienced professionals also benefit from fresh perspectives. Last year, the lab saw a record number of 274 applications, signaling its growing reputation in the global film community. “Platform was designed to challenge outdated models of development and to connect creatives across experience levels, formats, and borders,” said Sophie Mathisen, executive director of For Film’s Sake.

The Lab’s Impact

Platform Lab’s influence has already been felt throughout the industry. As Mathisen noted, many alumni of the program have gone on to land significant development and enterprise opportunities. This success demonstrates that the lab isn’t just about idea generation—it’s about equipping filmmakers with the skills, connections, and confidence they need to take their careers to the next level.

It’s clear that the lab has become an important fixture in the development of film talent. And the backing from Screen NSW is crucial in making it happen. This support helps the program reach a wider audience and offer vital resources like accommodation, meals, and access to festival events for participants. For those facing financial hardship, there’s even a travel bursary to ensure the opportunity is accessible to all.

How to Apply for Platform Lab 2025

Applications for the 2025 edition of Platform Lab are now open and will close on May 25. Filmmakers who are interested in participating must submit a short questionnaire and a two-minute video pitch explaining their approach to collaboration and why they believe Platform will help them grow as creatives. Shortlisted applicants will be notified on May 26, with interviews set to take place that week. The final selection of participants will be announced on June 2.

Here’s what potential participants should expect:

  • A comprehensive 6-8 hour daily workshop schedule

  • The chance to connect with other talented creatives and experts in the industry

  • A public pitch event at SFF Hub on June 14

  • Accommodation, meals, accreditation, and access to select festival events

  • A travel bursary for participants experiencing financial hardship

Why It Matters to the Industry

The Platform Lab represents a shift in how film development can be done. It’s not just about developing projects—it’s about changing the development process itself. In an era where film projects often go unnoticed due to outdated models and lack of support, Platform Lab offers a refreshing alternative. It’s a chance to break out of traditional silos and collaborate in a dynamic, real-world environment.

As Kaur noted, “Platform isn’t just a lab—it’s a catalyst.” It’s a space where creative sparks fly, and filmmakers can collaborate, test ideas, and develop their skills together. For any filmmaker looking to break into the industry or take their project to the next level, Platform is an invaluable resource.
